Job Description TITLE:
MSD – INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT
REPORTS TO:
PRINCIPAL/SUPERVISOR
BASIC FUNCTION:
Assist certified teacher(s) in providing instruction to individual or small groups; monitor and report student progress.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing academic and life skills instruction as directed by the teacher(s); maintain records of student progress.
Participate as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams.
Assist in scoring and recording test information.
Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior; check and assist students with lab work as necessary.
Perform routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials; have basic knowledge of computer operation; operate copy machines; maintain classroom records; maintain attendance records; maintain service logs for the purpose of Medicaid billing; transport students as needed, in a board owned motor vehicle (which does not require a CDL to operate), for the purpose of participating in community based instruction activities.
Provide support to the teacher(s) by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits; operating audio‑visual equipment, operating educational training equipment, distributing and collecting paper and supplies.
Assist in overseeing students while in labs; provide for supplies inventory as needed.
Assist students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance.
Confer, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
Contact the parents of students who are absent.
Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations; assist students with personal/self care needs including but not limited to handling and positioning, wheelchair care, walker care and monitoring, bowel care, skin care and monitoring, gastrostomy tube feeding, shunt monitoring, catheterization and postural drainage; and changing trach ties, oxygen supplementation and other duties as assigned.
Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assist in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips.
Participate in required meetings and required in‑service training programs as assigned.
Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Basic subjects taught in the District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Basic record‑keeping techniques.
Confidentiality of student records.
Documentation for Medicaid billing.
Best practice in assisting in implementation of life skills/personal care skills instruction.
Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning; or assisting students with personal care such as feeding, bathroom needs and personal hygiene.
Help manage behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed.
Recognize differences in each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapt methods and interaction accordingly.
Work with individual students or small groups and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher.
Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom (including lunchroom, bus and playground duty).
Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
ABILITY TO
Learn child guidance principals and practices.
Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public, including members of ethnic communities.
Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities.
Print and write legibly.
Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Learn procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Learn to apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities.
Work cooperatively with others.
Monitor, observe and report student behavior according to approved policies and procedures.
Operate instructional and office equipment.
Ability to drive and be insurable to transport students as needed in a board owned motor vehicle which does not require a CDL to operate.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and (1) have completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; (2) obtained an associate’s or higher degree.
Must pass a criminal records check, a physical examination, and tuberculosis skin test prior to employment.
Effective 7‑1‑14 (for all current employees): Must pass a driver’s record background check and qualify as an insurable driver under our district insurance policy if assignment includes transporting students for community based instruction activities.
