Under the leadership of Attorney General Raúl Torrez, the New Mexico Department of Justice serves as the chief legal authority for the state of New Mexico. The NMDOJ works to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, and the rights of all citizens are protected.

The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit Investigates and prosecutes fraud committed by Medicaid providers, including hospitals, nursing homes, care facilities, laboratories, doctors, dentists, nurses, personal care providers, and therapists. We conduct investigations into billing for services not rendered, billing for a higher level of service than provided, fraudulent prescriptions for dangerous opioids and narcotics, and whistleblower actions brought by an individual on behalf of the government. How Medicaid providers commit fraud is constantly evolving and the Unit must adjust accordingly to protect the system that helps so many New Mexicans.

The Unit also investigates and prosecutes abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation against residents in facilities, including assisted living facilities and nursing homes.

As a valued New Mexico Department of Justice employee, you will receive a hiring bonus of forty (40) hours of leave at your start date to be used at any time. This is in addition to standard leave accrual for employees.

Why does the job exist?

Supervises and manages investigative programs within the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the New Mexico Attorney General's Office.

How does it get done?

Supervises personnel conducting criminal and civil investigations, liaisons with federal, state and local law jurisdictions to develop cohesive working relationships and to jointly investigate financial crimes, consults with unit prosecutors, prepares reports and contributes to other's reports, works with the unit's other supervisors, deputy director and director to complete projects and to meet federal grant requirements.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following experience:

-Law Enforcement supervisory or managerial experience. -Experience conducting white collar/economic crime investigations. -Experience investigating healthcare provider fraud. -Experience with working with state and/or federal prosecutors in criminal matters. -Experience serving on law enforcement task force(s). -Knowledge of healthcare fraud statutes (state and/or federal). -Relevant certifications like CFE, AHFI, CECFE, is preferred but not required

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business or Public Administration, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Police Science, or other related field plus six (6) years' experience in law enforcement, criminal investigation, white-collar or economic/financial fraud investigation, four (4) of which shall be in a supervisory capacity. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Currently carry a valid New Mexico law enforcement certification or be eligible for certification by waiver of training.

Employment Requirements

Enforcement Certification must complete the New Mexico Law Enforcement Basic Police Officer Training (BPOT) Academy or certification by waiver training, within 1 year of employment as set forth in 29-7-6B NMSA 1978. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a mix of office settings and in the field for both conducting investigations. Extensive time in vehicles both for travel and when necessary for observation/investigation of assigned matters. Ability to lift, sit for long periods of time, travel out of town as necessary, computer usage required, extensive use of keyboard, occasional meeting of deadlines with severe time constraints.
