Position Summary
The Social Media Professional I supports communications and marketing efforts for the Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources by developing and executing digital strategies that increase awareness of the school's academic programs, research, outreach, and student experiences. Working under the direction of the Director of Communications, this position manages Warnell's social media presence and contributes to broader digital communications initiatives that strengthen the school's visibility, support undergraduate recruitment, and enhance engagement with key audiences.
This role plans and produces content for social media and other digital platforms, including managing the social media content calendar, drafting and editing copy, capturing photos and videos from classes, field experiences, and events, and supporting integrated marketing campaigns. The position will also occasionally assist with the development of web and print materials that promote Warnell's programs, initiatives, and community impact.
The position collaborates with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and campus partners to identify storytelling opportunities and translate complex academic programs, research, and outreach activities into accessible and engaging communications. Success requires strong writing and storytelling skills, creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to plan and execute digital communications that build engagement, highlight student experiences, and strengthen Warnell's brand.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
1-2 years of experience in higher education, science communication, or a related field.
Familiarity with UGA brand standards and campus culture.
Photography and/or video production experience.
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, natural resources, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience creating digital and print content for marketing, communications, or recruitment.
Excellent written, visual, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with strong attention to detail.
Duties & Responsibilities Coordinate and Execute Social Media Strategy and Day-to-Day
Plan, create, publish, and monitor social media content aligned with Warnell's communications strategy.
Manage Warnell's social media calendar and maintain consistent posting across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other relevant platforms.
Ensure institutional brand and communications guidelines are applied consistently across social media accounts.
Create and edit platform‑appropriate content, including graphics, short‑form video, reels, carousels, and stories.
Capture and produce social media content through photography, videography, and short‑form video editing.
Manage community engagement across platforms by responding to messages and comments, coordinating collaborations, and monitoring user‑generated content.
Monitor performance using analytics tools, establish baseline metrics and engagement goals, and adjust strategies to improve audience growth and engagement.
Support growth in followers and audience reach through organic strategies and targeted paid campaigns.
Provide social media coverage of events, classes, and other storytelling opportunities.
Stay current with emerging social media tools, technologies, and trends to increase awareness and engagement.
Support social media responsibilities during emergency communications situations.
Maintain a library of visual and written assets for ongoing use in campaigns and publications.
Outreach and Collaboration
Collaborate regularly with the Director of Communications, Dean, and Warnell leadership to identify priorities, shape initiatives, and align communications with the school's strategic goals.
Partner with the Undergraduate Student Recruitment & Outreach Coordinator, Graduate Program Coordinator, student services staff, and the Associate Deans for Research and Outreach to ensure consistent messaging and maximize outreach opportunities.
Coordinate with the Warnell Recruitment & Outreach Coordinator to promote student engagement through the Student Ambassadors program, including student‑led digital takeovers.
Participate in events and meetings to build relationships with faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
Collaborate with creative and communications teams across campus to amplify messaging and strengthen partnerships with other colleges and schools.
Provide consultation and guidance to colleagues on social media best practices and tools.
Implement engagement tactics such as student takeovers, polls, and Q&A campaigns.
Attend courses, labs, and student events (e.g., First‑Year Odyssey, Day on the Lawn, recruitment fairs) to capture photography, video, and student interviews.
Coordinate with faculty and staff to identify and secure opportunities for content capture.
Project Management
Manage communications projects using project management software, including milestone tracking and status reporting to ensure timely delivery.
Utilize social media management platforms (e.g., Hootsuite, Bitly, LinkTree) to schedule posts, monitor engagement, and analyze performance.
Partner with third‑party vendors to support targeted digital advertising and paid media campaigns.
Other Duties as Assigned
Perform additional communications and marketing duties as assigned.
Physical Demands This position may require evening meetings, occasional weekend work, and travel for events and content capture. A valid driver's license is required.
