HOUSING OPS & ASSIGNMENTS (BL-HOAA-IUBLA) Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) is a public research institution with a total enrollment of over 45,000 students. IUB offers a range of academic programs and campus life experiences, including Big Ten sports, 900+ student organizations, and a vibrant arts community. IU Housing accommodates approximately 13,000 students in 19 residence centers, with 21 Living Learning Centers and Thematic Communities. The Housing Operations and Assignments office facilitates occupancy management, contract implementation, and front-line service within the Office of Student Life. Housing staff balance customer service and student development in a fast-paced environment. The Assistant Director for Housing Operations and Assignments provides leadership for room assignments, occupancy management, and overall housing operations to support an efficient and student-centered residential experience. This role oversees assignments across residence halls, furnished apartments, and unfurnished apartments. In collaboration with 2 Housing Assignments Managers, the Assistant Director establishes overarching strategies and guiding philosophies for the assignments process, including contract renewals for returning and continuing students. Responsibilities
Assists Director with overall operations and coordination of the office, leadership team, and direction of the department. Provides strategic leadership and oversight for housing assignments and occupancy management across residence halls, furnished apartments, and unfurnished apartments. Responds to inquiries and concerns from students, families, and campus partners related to housing assignments, contracts, and other on-campus housing information. Coordinates assignment-related activities, facilitates information exchange, and resolves issues related to room changes, contract questions, and housing availability. Serves as a member of the Housing Operations and Assignments Leadership Team. Supervises the daily work of and provides ongoing training and professional development for other Housing Operations and Assignment staff, ensuring efficient and consistent service delivery. Uses StarRez and Customer Relations Management (CRM) platforms to manage housing assignments, tracks student communications, and supports data-driven decision-making within housing operations. Develops and implements student-centered housing assignment policies, procedures, and philosophies. Anticipates and analyzes occupancy trends and assignment data to inform operational decisions and improve housing services. Collaborates with Housing Assignments Clerks to guide day-to-day assignment processes and ensure consistency in service delivery. Manages IU Housing website content and updates to ensure accurate and timely communication. Oversees assignment communication processes, including the use of marketing tools to streamline student outreach. Delivers presentations to prospective, new, and current students and families to support housing education and engagement. Leads the annual re-contracting process for returning residents, ensuring clear communication and timely execution. Trains campus partners on business processes and housing software platforms, including StarRez, to enhance cross-functional collaboration. Writes and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs) to promote consistency, efficiency, and sustainability of housing operations. Partners with Living Learning Center directors to manage housing assignments and placements, communicating regularly and tracking community sizes to ensure appropriate capacity and growth. Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises a team of Assignments Managers and Housing Assignments Clerks, focusing on staff development and effective service delivery. General Responsibilities
Provides day-to-day operational management of residence life staff. Establishes short-term operational objectives. Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency. Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed. Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff. Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff. Ensures and provides training to assigned staff to improve residence life operations; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff. Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry residence life standards, best practices, and emerging technology; keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems. Required Bachelor's degree in related field. Preferred Master\'s degree in higher education student affairs or related field.
