Orange Media Network DAMchic Contributing Director 2026-2027
Position Summary: We are seeking fifteen (15) part‑time student employees (max 24 hours/week) to serve as DAMchic Contributing Directors for Oregon State University's Orange Media Network. The role involves pitching content ideas, directing photoshoots, and writing stories for the print magazine, website, and social media platforms.
Students will develop essential communication, critical thinking, and professionalism skills, aligned with the National Association of Colleges and Employers competencies.
Position Responsibilities
Pitches, accepts, develops, and writes newsworthy stories for the OSU community.
Conducts research and interviews to produce full stories with at least three relevant sources and a minimum length of 400 words.
Directs photoshoots, coordinating with models, photographers, makeup artists, and clothing stores.
Remains objective and provides fair and accurate coverage.
Participates in readouts with editors to make revisions in style or content.
Suggests photo and/or video coverage to enhance online presentation.
Shares stories on social media to reach audience.
Attends all staff meetings as required by the editor‑in‑chief.
Collaborates to grow audience engagement.
Other duties as assigned by the editor.
Additional Responsibilities
Responds to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day.
Uses project management platforms such as Basecamp or Discord.
Proactively communicates work status with editors.
Notifies adviser immediately of ethical, legal, personnel, or controversial problems.
Leadership & Inclusion
Ensures designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion.
Follows OMN policies and procedures.
Acts professionally at all times.
Maintains academic enrollment and standing as required for eligibility.
Required Qualifications
Knowledgeable in news gathering, news values, and fact‑checking strategies.
Willing to learn Associated Press Style and adhere to SPJ Code of Ethics.
Flexible with hours to complete assignments.
Able to meet deadlines.
Strong writer, communicator, and comfortable directing models and photographers.
Organized and reliable.
Comfortable giving and receiving feedback.
Professional and calm in challenging situations.
Completes all elements of the On‑Boarding Curriculum.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with photo and video coverage.
Background in journalism or a related field.
Compensation
Full spread: $73 per story‑photo spread.
Spread plus 200‑word “artist statement”: $37.
Minimum hourly rate: $15.05 (Standard); $14.05 (Non‑Urban); $16.30 (Portland Metro).
Maximum hourly rate: $21.50 (Standard); $21.00 (Non‑Urban); $22.00 (Portland Metro).
