We are seeking a Patient Eligibility Coordinator to work on‑site at Carilion - New River Valley, Christiansburg, VA. The role involves interviewing uninsured/under‑insured patients to determine eligibility for state Medicaid benefit or financial assistance programs, assisting with application processes, following up on submitted applications, and maintaining accurate documentation within patient accounting systems.

Location Carilion - New River Valley, Christiansburg, VA (on‑site)

Salary This position pays between $18.65 - $20.50/hr. based on experience.

Essential Job Functions

Review all referred patients for program eligibility opportunities and coordinate the application process.

Communicate effectively with patients to obtain required documents.

Track submitted applications to determination point and update applicable insurance information.

Document all relevant actions and communications in patient accounting systems.

Maintain knowledge of state and federal program requirements and share information with colleagues and supervisors.

Develop and maintain proactive working relationships with county, state, and federal Medicaid caseworkers and collaborate with other revenue cycle departments.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

1-2 years of experience in the healthcare industry interacting with patients regarding hospital financial issues.

Understanding of revenue cycle processes including admission, billing, payments, and denials.

Comprehensive knowledge of patient insurance and benefit verification procedures.

Knowledge of health insurance requirements, medical terminology, CPT, or procedure codes.

Experience in patient access, managed care/insurance, or call center is highly preferred.

Inquisitive and open to innovation, including AI solutions to improve processes and patient experience.

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED; post‑secondary education combined with experience will be considered.

Certifications

CRCR within 9 months of hire.
