POSITION SUMMARY
This is a 2-3 year Graduate Assistantship position, depending on the degree pursued. The role includes a tuition benefit and stipend, with work hours averaging 20 hours per week.
The Graduate Assistant serving as the Technical Director Assistant supports all technical aspects of campus events, productions, and performances. The role works with audio, lighting, video, scenic elements, and rigging systems to ensure high-quality event execution across multiple venues. The GA collaborates with departments, student groups, and external clients, often serving as a lead technician for events. This position is ideal for individuals seeking hands‑on experience in event production, technical theatre, and live production management while pursuing graduate studies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Event & Production Support
Assist with setup, operation, and teardown of campus events across various venues
Serve as lead technician on assigned events or when the Technical Director is unavailable
Troubleshoot and resolve live technical issues during events
Technical Operations & Maintenance
Maintain and organize equipment inventories (audio, lighting, video, rigging, scenic)
Identify and report equipment issues; assist with basic repairs or maintenance
Keep all technical and storage spaces clean, organized, and functional
Leadership & Communication
Communicate technical needs and event details with clients, faculty, staff, and student groups
Represent the technical team professionally during campus events
Take initiative in coordinating logistics for smaller events
Theatre & Venue Support
Support theatre productions, including load‑ins, load‑outs, tech weeks, and strikes
Assist in maintaining and improving campus performance spaces
Administrative Responsibilities
Prepare technical documents such as cue sheets, equipment lists, and floor plans
Track weekly hours and communicate workload fluctuations
Participate in meetings, planning sessions, and event reviews
Time Commitment & Flexibility
Work an average of 20 hours per week.
Hours may exceed 20 during high‑demand periods; compensatory time is expected before or after busy weeks.
Evening and weekend work is common and considered part of the position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Required
Foundational knowledge of AV systems (microphones, speakers, projectors, basic routing)
Basic understanding of lighting systems and lighting consoles
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage small projects
Strong communication, professionalism, and interpersonal skills
Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and techniques
Preferred / Growth Areas
Troubleshooting AV and lighting systems
Safe handling of rigging systems and awareness of rigging safety protocols
Basic scenic construction and stagecraft
Familiarity with software such as QLab, ProPresenter, lighting console software, etc.
Experience working on live events or theatre productions
