Job Description Purpose Statement
The job of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment is to support teaching and learning by providing information and serving as a resource to others; achieving defined objectives by planning, evaluating, developing and implementing and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines; and serving as a member of the leadership team.
Essential Functions
Working with the Assistant Superintendent(s) for Instruction Support to oversee the overall K‑12 instruction program including curriculum development, articulation, improvement, evaluation, and the development of effective training programs.
Supervise and evaluate the work of the Directors of Assessment, Professional Development, Gifted, Language Arts, Fine Arts, and Special Education.
Interpret the programs, philosophy, and policies of the district to staff, students, and the community.
Maintain liaison with social, professional, civic, volunteer, and other community agencies and groups having an interest in the schools.
Prepare state reports and claims as required and attend Board meetings as requested.
Provide leadership in developing cultural competence for all district staff.
Collaborate with internal and external personnel to implement and maintain services and programs.
Compile data from multiple sources to evaluate district curriculum and services, develop programs, and comply with financial, legal, and administrative requirements.
Coordinate program components, support needs, and materials to deliver services in compliance with guidelines.
Develop new curriculum and courses of study and establish a process for adopting instructional resources to achieve district goals.
Direct department operations, maintain services, and implement new programs for timely and compliant delivery.
Facilitate curriculum program articulation across schools and the community, enhancing relationships with district stakeholders.
Implement assigned programs and projects (e.g., curriculum maps, Arizona State Standards, Professional Learning Communities) to align with district and state objectives.
Manage curriculum content and student courses to conform with district and state standards.
Monitor budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances, and financial activities to ensure accuracy and fiscal compliance.
Participate as a facilitator in meetings, workshops, and seminars to identify issues, develop recommendations, provide training, and gather information.
Perform personnel functions such as interviewing, evaluating, training, and supervising to maintain staffing and productivity.
Prepare written materials (plans, reports, analyses, correspondence) to convey information and recommendations regarding district curriculum.
Respond to issues and inquiries from school administrators, parents, and educators, recommending or implementing action plans.
Serve as liaison to school principals and parents to evaluate situations and programs, provide direction, and achieve organizational objectives.
Other Functions
Serve on Superintendent’s Cabinet.
Perform other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent to ensure efficient unit operation.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
At least five years of successful school district experience in a public K‑12 setting, including experience related to job responsibilities; experience and knowledge of modern managerial processes and collaborative problem‑solving.
Education:
Doctorate degree preferred in a related field.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Proficiency with standard office equipment and software; planning and project management; accurate record‑keeping; strong written and oral communication; accounting, budgeting, personnel processes, and program planning; conflict resolution; flexibility in working with diverse groups; working knowledge of spreadsheet, word‑processing, presentation software; ability to communicate effectively.
Certifications and Licenses:
Appropriate Administrative Credential and required clearances such as Criminal Justice fingerprint/background clearance.
Other Requirements:
Maintain certificates/licenses; FLSA Status: Exempt.
