Position Overview As a Senior Collections Specialist, you’ll lead and optimize collections strategy across our portfolio in a fast‑paced, innovative environment. You’ll focus on maximizing cash flow, reducing loss, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements. In this role, you’ll work with a challenge‑oriented, dedicated team while also using independent judgment to prioritize actions that improve financial performance and strengthen processes related to Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) and Section 8 programs.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and ensure all current month Housing Choice Voucher payments are received by the 10th of the month, using discretion to address discrepancies and delays
Direct and prioritize processing of mid‑month payments within 48 hours of receipt
Train and oversee proper billing setup for Section 8 future updates, evaluating effectiveness and ensuring compliance
Analyze Housing Choice Voucher and past resident collection reports to assess collections status, outstanding balances, and the effectiveness of current collection policies and procedures
Design, implement, and continuously improve systems for past rent changes to ensure accurate charge adjustments and financials
Oversee and manage abated units, partnering with the Housing Choice Voucher specialist and site managers to minimize loss
Establish and manage relationships with local HUD offices to support clear communication, payment timeliness, and accurate balance reconciliation
Ensure third‑party payments are sent electronically or mailed to the corporate office when ACH isn’t available; identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements
Independently prioritize and determine collection strategies and actions across the portfolio to align with cash flow needs and ownership objectives
Oversee and evaluate past resident collection processes, ensuring files are properly submitted and past resident collections are maximized
Partner with and provide direction to third‑party collection agencies, monitor performance, and make strategic decisions to improve collection outcomes
Maintain strong documentation standards for calls, emails, and other communications, organizing records to support follow‑up efforts
Complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required; college degree preferred
At least 5 years of experience in collections, accounts receivable, or a related area
Flexible work schedule availability due to the timing of Housing Choice Voucher payments
Strong written, oral, and reading communication skills with the ability to accurately interpret and document information
Independent leadership skills and supervisory or management experience
Proficiency with Microsoft Office for Windows, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel
Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, set priorities, meet deadlines, and take pride in quality work
Ability to travel up to 10% of your work schedule
Availability to work in the corporate office when needed to ensure timely deposit of payments when mail‑handling team members are out
