Assistant Director, AI and Learning

Assistant Director for AI and Learning Reporting to the Executive Director and collaborating with Center for Teaching and Learning (CCTL) staff and relevant campus partners, the Assistant Director for AI and Learning will design, develop, and implement programming and resources to:

support faculty and instructors in articulating and implementing effective, appropriate, and evidence‑informed pedagogical approaches to AI in their courses;

support the development of innovative teaching practices with AI tools; and

support students in the learning‑focused and appropriate use of AI tools in their education.

With support from the Executive Director, the Assistant Director will build on, enhance, and expand existing AI teaching and learning initiatives at the University, promoting thoughtful and forward‑looking approaches to AI in a liberal arts education.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with CCTL staff and campus partners to design, develop, and implement programming and resources on effective, innovative, and evidence‑informed pedagogical approaches to AI and related technologies.

Develop and implement programming to support AI‑aware teaching methods, assessment strategies, and rethinking learning goals and assignment design.

Support the integration of AI tools into courses, in‑class activities, and assessments.

Develop models and examples of innovative activities and assignments that make use of AI tools.

Provide consultation support for faculty and instructors on teaching and learning issues related to AI.

Support divisions, schools, departments, and programs in creating a culture and norms for appropriate AI use, based on local disciplinary and curricular values and goals.

Develop and update online resources that help faculty and instructors make informed choices about AI in teaching.

Stay current on advancements in AI technology, tool releases, national discussions, and scholarly literature related to teaching and learning implications of AI tools to inform CCTL and University initiatives.

Collaborate with the Senior Assistant Director of Assessment and Scholarship to support assessment of AI‑aware teaching and learning practices.

Develop programming and support for students on learning in the context of AI and responsible use of AI tools.

Consult with relevant College and University offices on best practices for supporting student awareness and responsible AI usage.

Support and contribute to efforts to assess student attitudes and use of AI to inform programmatic initiatives.

Present program content and serve as liaison with internal and external stakeholders.

Perform related work as needed.

Education and Minimum Qualifications

College or university degree in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD or other terminal degree, either in‑hand or expected by start date.

Background in educational development, instructional design, or related field.

Teaching experience in higher education.

Experience developing programs, leading workshops, and providing individual consultations.

Experience working with faculty and instructors at a research‑intensive university.

Comfort in an academic and research‑intensive environment.

Preferred Competencies

Strong understanding of a range of AI tools and their pedagogical affordances, limitations, and applications in higher education.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.

Ability to work with faculty and instructors from diverse disciplines and perspectives on AI’s impact on learning.

Demonstrated commitment to advancing innovative and inclusive teaching in higher education.

Ability to work effectively under supervision and as part of a team.

Ability to establish relationships with people of diverse backgrounds.

Autonomous work, taking initiative without detailed instructions.

Excellent facilitation, consultation, and collaboration skills.

Working Conditions

Office environment; fast‑paced; some evening and weekend work.

Computer use for 4–6 hours per day and periodic walking to other campus locations.

Option to work remotely two days per week.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $68,000–$85,000 per year.

Exempt under FLSA.
