The Bedford Historical Slave Foundation (BHSF) mission is to be a center for research, promotion and preservation of a genealogical archive, repository of artifacts and educational curriculum, and archive of family and historical stories of Bedford County, Virginia, African American history and culture. BHSF will engage both local and online communities to tell a more complete story of African Americans' ancestry and historical contributions, fostering an understanding of shared roots within communities bearing plantation history, and seeking to become a reconciling force between races, focused on Bedford County and beyond. BHSF is in the process of seeking grants to rehabilitate the Court Street Methodist Church and establish a learning center to provide: static and video displays of Bedford County Black history and culture, with exhibits, photographs, maps and artifacts; narratives from individuals and families shared via audio recording; genealogical research using the BHSF archive and networking computers; a fully accessible gathering place with kitchenette facilities for family, educational, and non‑profit groups; and a display area for the church's history. BHSF Director Role

The BHSF Director will lead the organization toward achieving its mission, reporting to the BHSF Board of Directors, regularly communicating and seeking approval for plans, progress, budget, and any request for additional funds. The BHSF Director is a self‑motivated role that represents BHSF to the public, so the BHSF Director must have a professional demeanor, ethical behavior, and a reliable work ethic. BHSF Director Objectives and Job Duties

These represent the core duties and not the boundaries of the BHSF Director. Establish and manage BHSF website and presence on appropriate social media platforms.

Make regular postings on website and social media (e.g. weekly) that attract and sustain online interest in BHSF. Solicit donations and annual memberships.

Organize and lead Membership and Fund‑Raising Events:

Local events to engage the community and enhance member participation. Online events for fundraising and growth of membership.

Establish and sustain relationships with appropriate community leaders and groups aligned with or that complement the BHSF mission:

Include schools, churches, other Black and historical organizations, and elected officials. Engage community leaders to sustain their support for BHSF. Regularly communicate plans and progress with BHSF Board of Directors. If possible, provide resources for teachers to supplement local history related to slavery.

Participate with the BHSF Board in identifying and applying for any grants. Perform genealogical and historical research focused around Bedford County using a BHSF provided computer.

Plantation histories and genealogies of slaves and their descendants. Historical contributions by Bedford residents and their descendants.

Use the BHSF provided computer to store all research, information, and created materials related to the BHSF mission, along with daily cloud backups. All the work output of the BHSF Director remains the property of BHSF. Other objectives as assigned by the BHSF Board of Directors. Skillset Preferred

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to engage a broad range of people both in person and online. Ability to sustain websites and social media presence. Ability to fund raise. Ability to perform genealogical research, using the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS) to establish the reliability and credibility of genealogical conclusions. Ability to generate resource material and make public presentations. Job Type / Compensation

The BHSF Director is a half‑time, independent contractor role. Most work is remote but the director must be able to travel to Bedford, VA at their own expense for community events and activities. Virginia residents or past residents preferred. The position is paid monthly with expected annual salary of $18,000 - $20,000.
