Description
Are you ready to lead interior design projects and elevate design excellence? At SMRT, our interior designers play a critical role in shaping high-performing environments that align design vision, technical rigor, and client goals. As an Interior Designer III, you’ll lead the design and execution of interior environments across all phases of a project—from early programming through construction—while maintaining design integrity, technical quality, and regulatory compliance.
This role is ideal for an experienced designer ready to take ownership of complex projects, guide junior staff, and contribute to the continued advancement of SMRT’s interiors practice.
What You’ll Do:
Lead interior design efforts from concept through construction documentation
Serve as lead interior designer on complex projects with minimal oversight
Conduct programming interviews and client visioning sessions
Develop comprehensive interior design concepts, including space planning, finishes, FF&E, and branding integration
Oversee the preparation of drawings, specifications, renderings, and FF&E packages
Coordinate closely with architectural teams, engineers, consultants, and vendors
Review and approve shop drawings, submittals, and specifications
Participate in and lead client meetings, clearly presenting design rationale and solutions
Conduct site visits to verify field conditions and evaluate design implementation
Support project budgeting, scheduling, and resource planning for interior scopes
Mentor junior designers through guidance, feedback, and knowledge sharing
Contribute to marketing and business development efforts, including proposals and visual content
Integrate sustainable design principles and support LEED, WELL, or similar initiatives
Stay current with design trends, materials, and technologies while maintaining required continuing education

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design or Interior Architecture from a CIDA-accredited program with at least 8 years of professional experience or Associate degree or certificate with at least 10 years of professional experience
NCIDQ certification required
LEED, WELL, or similar certification preferred or actively pursuing
Demonstrated success leading interior design projects and client engagements
Strong technical knowledge of interior construction, codes, and documentation
Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD; advanced skills with Bluebeam, SketchUp, Lumion, and Adobe Creative Suite
Ability to mentor junior staff and lead interdisciplinary collaboration
Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
