Position Summary
Boston Ship Repair is seeking skilled Outside Machinists to perform repair, maintenance, and overhaul work on a wide range of shipboard machinery. This role offers the opportunity to work on high-profile vessels in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities Install, align, and repair pumps, motors, generators, propellers, shafting, bearings, compressors, and hydraulic units. Operate and maintain hydraulic equipment; troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems. Use torque wrenches (metric and standard) to achieve precise tolerances. Conduct dock and sea trials to verify machinery performance after repair. Perform alignments using dial indicators, micrometers, and other precision tools. Read and interpret blueprints, job specifications, and manuals. Set up and operate portable machine tools such as boring bars, drills, and grinders. Work on large ocean-going vessels in an active shipyard environment. Work safely in all environments, including confined spaces and at heights.
Qualifications
35 years of marine, industrial, or shipyard mechanic experience preferred. Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and torque wrench applications. Skilled with hand tools, measuring instruments, and alignment equipment. Ability to work from technical drawings and follow detailed instructions. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and follow safety protocols.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Shipboard and shipyard conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, noise, and moving machinery. Requires standing, climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs daily.
