Position:
Full-time staff assignment editor covered under the WGA-ABC National Agreement.
Job Summary WABC-TV, a flagship ABC station in New York City, produces more than 45 hours of live local news and weather each week. The Assignment Editor role is a critical member of the newsroom, coordinating coverage of breaking and daily stories, assigning crews, gathering information, and finding original high‑impact stories that reflect our diverse audience.
Work Schedule Two weekend shifts and three weekday shifts, with weekdays finalized based on operational needs. Flexible to work early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Responsibilities
Assign crews and reporters, gather information about developing news stories, and identify and generate original high‑impact stories that reflect our audience’s diversity.
Handle inquiries and requests from a variety of individuals and organizations.
Work closely with news managers, producers, and other assignment editors to coordinate coverage of breaking and daily stories.
Identify social media content for news stories and secure permission for use.
Interact with viewers daily via phone and social media.
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of 2 years of TV newsroom experience.
Strong teammate who interacts positively, ethically, and compassionately with others.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
High degree of ethics, empathy, professionalism, and ability to function well under pressure in fast‑paced situations.
Flexible to work various shifts as needed.
Preferred Requirements
Knowledge of police scanners and online newsgathering.
Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent experience.
Preferred Education
College degree.
Compensation & Benefits The base salary for this WGA position in New York is $139,913.00. A bonus and/or long‑term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and other benefits.
