LIBRARY DIRECTOR

The City of Central City is currently seeking candidates for a Library Director. Candidates should be creative, energetic and work well with the public. Education or experience in library management and computer technology is preferred but not required. This full-time position has a starting salary range of $24.00 to $28.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package includes family health insurance, sick and vacation leave and a 10% retirement contribution. Library Director
Definition
Under the direction of the Central City Public Library Board of Trustees, the Library Director plans, organizes, administers, and evaluates all library operations, services, and resources. The Director ensures responsive, top-notch quality library services that meet the needs of the Central City and Merrick County community, maintains compliance with Nebraska Library Commission accreditation standards, and serves as the primary liaison between the library, City of Central City, Merrick County, and the public.
Supervision
Receives policy direction and general administrative oversight from the Library Board of Trustees. Provides direct supervision to all library staff and volunteers.
Principal Duties
Administration & Leadership
• Lead, direct, and supervise all library personnel and volunteers; foster a positive, team-oriented workplace culture.
• Plan, organize, and direct library services in alignment with community needs and professional standards.
• Develop and implement strategic goals, policies, and procedures in collaboration with the Library Board.
• Evaluate library services, operations, and organizational effectiveness; implement improvements as needed.
• Ensure compliance with Nebraska Library Commission accreditation requirements and applicable laws.
Governance & Community Relations
• Serve as the primary liaison to the Library Board, Central City Council, Merrick County Board of Supervisors, and other governing bodies.
• Prepare and present monthly, annual, and statistical reports, including the Nebraska Public Library Survey.
• Build and maintain relationships with local organizations, schools, businesses, and regional/state library partners.
• Respond to patron inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
Financial Management & Funding
• Develop, administer, and monitor the library budget in coordination with the Board and City.
• Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants, donations, and partnerships.
• Prepare and submit funding requests, including annual requests to the Merrick County Board of Supervisors.
• Manage E-Rate applications and other applicable funding programs.
Personnel Management
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate library staff.
• Recommend and implement personnel actions (hiring, discipline, termination) as approved by the Board.
• Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for staff.
Collections & Services
• Oversee the development, maintenance, and evaluation of the library collection in all formats.
• Establish and maintain policies and procedures for circulation, reference, programming, and public services.
• Ensure delivery of high-quality reference, reader's advisory, and programming services for all ages.
Facilities & Technology
• Oversee maintenance, safety, and effective use of the library building and grounds.
• Create and implement a technology plan; troubleshoot routine computer issues; work with IT providers as needed.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Business, or a related field preferred.
• Experience in library services, customer service, or a related field; supervisory or management experience preferred.
• Nebraska Library Commission certification (or ability to obtain).
• Valid driver's license or ability to travel as required.
• Demonstrated competency with computers, technology, and digital resources.
Essential Functions
• Ability to travel for meetings, training, and regional collaboration.
• Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and perform physical library tasks.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and varied schedules.
