Job Description The City of Independence Communications Department is seeking a Digital Content Coordinator. This position supports the Communications Department in delivering timely, accurate public information across the City’s digital platforms. This role is responsible for producing and managing multimedia content, operating and directing live public meeting broadcasts, and ensuring high-quality audio/video production compliant with Open Records Laws. The ideal candidate is highly organized, technically skilled in media production, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, live production environment. SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED Works under the general supervision of the City’s Public Information Officer within the Communications Department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Digital Content Coordinator position will perform some or all of the following job duties, including additional duties as assigned. Content Creation and Media Create, write, and produce graphics and social media content for City platforms, including website and publications. Capture, edit, and produce engaging videos and photos that reflect the City’s mission and vision. Ensure all creative work aligns with the City’s brand standards. Social Media & Communication Assist with developing and implementing content plans and posting strategies for City-wide social media platforms. Maintain and update content for City social media pages, website pages, and video platforms. Help monitor digital engagement and suggest creative improvements. Streaming & Technical Provide technical direction and support for live and recorded public meetings, including streaming and archiving content. Operate and manage production equipment including robotic/studio cameras, camera control units, video switchers, audio mixers, audio boards, and related broadcast systems. Oversee pre‑production planning, live technical direction, and post‑production editing. Ensure all meeting recordings meet quality standards and comply with Open Records Laws. Broadcast live and recorded programming for the City of Independence YouTube Channel and select Teams Meetings. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues during live streams in collaboration with internal teams. Train other Communications staff (and potentially other departments) on production equipment and best practices in photography and videography. Partner with other members of the Communications team and City leadership to meet goals. Provide support through sharing the City’s stories and resources through print and digital media. Stay current with digital communication trends, social media best practices, and web writing standards. Focus on continued growth and development in areas such as graphic design, photography, videography, and social media strategy. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Graduation from college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Information Technology, or related field. Five years of photography and/or video production experience. An online portfolio of work demonstrating skills in videography and editing of long‑form and short‑form video content for social media platforms, which may include YouTube or Vimeo. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proven professional experience with photography and videography equipment (including mirror‑less camera, DSLR cameras, and osmos), remote‑operated cameras, and digital editing equipment. Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite; advanced knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects (or equivalent software). Knowledge of meeting production techniques and live‑streaming operations, including integrated multi‑camera AV systems. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, especially during live productions. Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with strong organizational and time‑management skills. Ability to maintain effective relations with elected officials, deal courteously and diplomatically with the public and online community, speak effectively before groups, and respond to questions. Navigate between buildings several miles apart. Maintain a regular and reliable level of attendance and punctuality. Special Requirements / Qualifications Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must complete required NIMS training within the first six months of hire. Must be able to work some evenings. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear, use visual acuity and lift and/or move a camera and related equipment. The employee may lift, carry, push, pull, and/or move 20 pounds frequently and 25‑30 pounds occasionally. Work may take place in close quarters with little room for moving around. Incumbent may be exposed to possible bodily injury from electrical shock. Exposed to outdoors which may include extreme hot or cold temperatures and adverse weather conditions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, critical thinking, and creative problem solving.
