Director for the Student Experience Overview The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development, aiding, directing, and informing students about services and programs that expand their educational experiences and prepare them for diverse local and global communities. The Division is responsible for many out‑of‑classroom aspects of student life at ECSU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services; residential life; student activities; community standards; special programs and services; student health & counseling services; and career services.

Responsibilities

Play a pivotal role in fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and engaging campus environment by developing and implementing co‑curricular programs that support student engagement, leadership development, and overall student success.

Lead the planning and execution of Viking Voyage Orientation, Week of Welcome (WOW), and related transition programs that ensure a successful introduction for new and transfer students.

Serve as an active member of the Parent & Family Weekend Task Force.

Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate Viking Voyage Leaders (VVL) to cultivate peer leadership and mentorship opportunities.

Co‑manage the SEAL work‑study student program in collaboration with the Coordinator for Student Life.

Assist with the Ad Astra Venue Reservations System.

Partner with colleagues across the Division of Student Affairs to support and implement initiatives that contribute to a seamless student experience.

Contribute to the development and assessment of First‑Year Experience (FYE) programs, ensuring integration with Student Engagement and Leadership priorities.

Provide leadership and support for major university traditions, including Viking Showcase (Fall, Winter, Spring), Homecoming, Winter Homecoming, Viking Fest, and Founders Day Convocation and Weekend.

Ensure new and transfer students are meaningfully connected to the Pre‑Alumni Association, supporting early engagement with ECSU’s culture of philanthropy and long‑term alumni involvement.

Support student retention, leadership development, and class‑specific programming as the primary advisor for the Freshmen Class, inclusive of Freshmen Student Elections and the Freshmen Showcase.

Represent the Division of Student Affairs in university‑wide initiatives and external engagements as assigned.

Manage program budgets within the portfolio, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources that support student development.

Develop and maintain a comprehensive annual calendar of events, workshops, and initiatives for new and transfer students that aligns with departmental program planning.

Establish, revise, and implement operational procedures to enhance program efficiency.

Coordinate data collection and assessment efforts.

Provide administrative support across Student Engagement and Leadership as needed.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Possess a working knowledge of first‑year and transfer students to ensure their transition to a college setting through engagement activities, events, programs, and resources.

Demonstrate the ability to articulate the role that student leadership opportunities serve in supporting retention and the overall academic mission of the university for first‑year and transfer students.

Possess the ability to work with computer systems, building management software, student organizational management software, Microsoft Office, and assessment tools.

Possess a working knowledge of Campus Labs/Engage software, VisualZen Orientation software, or equivalent.

Demonstrate an understanding of how the value of student engagement contributes to the success of college students.

Possess excellent problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills; the ability to analyze complex issues and effectively plan and organize work.

Possess excellent oral and written communication skills and experience in and awareness of the sensitivity required when interacting with, supervising, and addressing the needs of a diverse community.

Demonstrate the proven ability to foster collaborative relationships across campus, work well with parents/families, and contribute to creating a distinctive residential program.

Minimum Training and Experience Minimum training requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s in Student Affairs/Higher Education preferred) with at least two years of experience in positions that include student activities or other Student Affairs‑higher education oriented areas; or a combination of education and experience in Higher Education.
