About the Role This is a senior leadership role within a large, complex financial services organization undergoing a significant generational transition in its tax leadership team. The organization is intentionally investing in a director-level hire who can bring outside perspective, strong accounting judgment, and enterprise-wide tax leadership.
This role is designed to be a cornerstone leadership position within the Corporate Tax function. The individual hired will play a critical role in shaping strategy, developing future leaders, modernizing processes and technology, and ensuring continuity as long-tenured tax leaders approach retirement.
This position reports to the Head of Tax and operates as part of the core leadership team for a ~20-person Corporate Tax organization.
What You’ll Do Enterprise Tax Planning & Research Lead tax planning initiatives across multiple business lines within a complex, regulated financial services environment Own research and analysis of highly technical tax issues, including industry-specific considerations Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and assess impacts on planning, financial reporting, and compliance Collaborate with internal legal, finance, and operations partners on tax-related matters impacting products, investments, and policyholder obligations
Leadership, Stakeholder Management & Visibility Serve as a primary tax partner to senior leaders across the business, including investment, finance, and corporate leadership teams Confidently present complex tax issues, tradeoffs, and recommendations to executive leadership and the Board Act as a visible leader within the Tax organization, influencing outcomes across teams that may not report directly Build strong, trusted relationships with internal stakeholders, external auditors, and outside advisors
Financial Reporting & Accounting Integration Partner closely with the tax accounting and reporting functions to ensure alignment between planning activities and financial statement impacts Apply strong accounting judgment in evaluating tax-related financial reporting matters Participate in tax-related FP&A activities and support forecasting and modeling efforts Bring a CPA mindset to the role — balancing technical tax strategy with GAAP and reporting considerations
People, Process & Technology Leadership Contribute meaningfully to department-wide strategy, including talent development, succession planning, and operating model decisions Help evaluate and shape the future-state tax technology ecosystem, including third-party tools and automation opportunities Assess how emerging technology (including AI-enabled solutions) may impact workflows, skill sets, and staffing models Develop and mentor tax professionals, often in a matrixed environment, with an emphasis on broad exposure and professional growth Drive process improvement initiatives that increase efficiency, consistency, and scalability

Required / Strongly Preferred Background Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field CPA strongly preferred ~15+ years of progressive tax experience Significant experience in large public accounting or law firm environments Meaningful exposure to the insurance or financial services industry Experience spanning tax planning, research, and integration with accounting and financial reporting Prior in-house experience within a large, complex organization strongly favored
