Job Summary The Surplus Property Agent is responsible for managing and processing surplus assets—excess, obsolete, or unneeded property—for government agencies or educational institutions. This role involves coordinating the receipt, evaluation, storage, and then disposal or sale of surplus items, ensuring accurate record keeping and compliance with relevant state, federal, and agency policies. The classification requires a hands‑on approach in warehouse settings and may involve operating specialized equipment, guiding donators through available inventories, and coordinating auctions or transfer events.
Primary Responsibilities
Receive, unload, and verify incoming surplus property for condition and accuracy.
Perform initial quality assessments to determine whether items are suitable for resale, donation, or disposal.
Maintain and update detailed records in designated databases, tracking items as they move in and out of inventory.
Conduct regular cycle counts and scheduled audits, investigating discrepancies and ensuring inventory records are current.
Assess the value and potential marketability of surplus items.
Organize and maintain inventory space in warehousing facilities, ensuring items are stored safely and efficiently.
Provide assistance to donators or potential buyers by explaining item condition, usage, or disposal options.
Arrange transportation and delivery of surplus items as needed.
Operate heavy machinery, such as forklifts and other warehouse equipment, as required.
Perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Adhere to state and federal regulations, as well as internal policies governing surplus property management.
Prepare and submit periodic reports on the status of surplus property inventories and disposition activities.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail, particularly when managing data entry and physical inventory counts.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with donators, vendors, and internal teams.
Familiarity with computer‑based record‑keeping systems and basic math skills.
Ability to quickly learn proprietary databases or inventory management software.
Must be capable of lifting heavy items and performing tasks in physically demanding warehouse environments.
Ability to quickly identify and resolve discrepancies in inventory and streamline processes for efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum of 2 years of practical experience in warehousing, shipping, receiving, or a related field.
Satisfaction of the minimum qualifications, including years of experience and service, does not entitle employees to automatic progression within the job series. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee’s demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
