Overview
The Head Golf Professional is responsible for supporting the Director of Golf in the overall management of the golf operation. This includes tournament programming, staff scheduling, golf shop merchandise concession, and outing coordination. This role supports the Director of Golf in the daily operation of the facility and assumes full operational responsibility in their absence. The Head Golf Professional is committed to delivering exceptional service and ensuring the highest level of satisfaction for all members and guests. This position is designed to further develop leadership, operational, and teaching skills, serving as a pathway to future golf operation leadership roles.
Experience Required
Active PGA of America membership in good standing (PGA Member or Associate)
3-5 years of experience at a private club or high-end daily fee facility
Strong knowledge of golf operations, tournament management, and the rules of golf
Evidence of leadership and supervisory experience
Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization skills
Self-motivated with a strong focus on service and member satisfaction
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency in computer applications including ForeTees, Golf Genius, Jonas, and Microsoft Office
Familiarity with customer relationship management strategies and player development programs
Commitment to maintaining a professional image within the club and community
Dedication to ongoing professional development, including industry trends and teaching advancements
Maintain a credible golf game and stay current with instructional practices
Essential Responsibilities
Develop and manage an engaging tournament program that serves all member segments and maintains a high level of participation and enthusiasm
Plan and execute weekly tournaments, including promotion, course setup, scoring, prize distribution, billing, and follow-up
Oversee opening and closing procedures, updating processes as needed to improve efficiency
Manage golf shop payroll, staff scheduling, and daily assignments for Assistant Professionals and Outside Service staff
Communicate regularly with members through email, newsletters, club platforms, and the club website to promote events and updates
Attend club meetings as requested by the Director of Golf (i.e., Golf, Greens, Communications Committees)
Collaborate with the Director of Golf to support and execute the Golf Committee's vision and goals
Provide individual instruction and group clinics for players of all skill levels
Maintain strong working relationships with all club departments
Manage tee sheet operations, including reservations, check-in, fee collection, and pace of play
Ensure proper storage, cleanliness, and maintenance of golf equipment and merchandise
Accurately track and verify all player charges, including greens fees, carts, and club services
Support player development programs, including Men's, Women's, and Junior initiatives
Provide club repair and fitting services to members and guests
Administer and maintain the USGA Handicap System and related compliance programs
Oversee operations of the practice facility, outside services, and associated staff
Respond promptly and professionally to members needs to ensure a consistently high level of satisfaction
Build strong relationships with members to enhance their overall club experience
Plan and execute golf outings, including staffing, logistics, and event coordination
Coordinate golf activities with other departments as needed
Participate in golf activities with members and guests
Maintain and enhance teaching and coaching skills to support player development
Ensure staff understanding and proper application of the rules of golf
Oversee the golf cart fleet, including maintenance and recordkeeping
Retail Management
Oversee Golf Shop merchandise concession, ensuring alignment with the club's mission and operational goals
Collaborate with the Director of Golf on purchasing strategies and product selection
Manage inventory levels within budget guidelines
Maintain accurate inventory control procedures, including ordering, receiving, pricing, and displaying of merchandise
Utilize POS systems to safeguard inventory and financial transactions
Ensure accurate recordkeeping of retail policies and procedures
Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing Golf Shop
Conduct regular inventory counts and manage special orders
Administrative
Recruit, train, supervise, and motivate Assistant Golf Professionals, Golf Shop Staff, and Outside Service team members
Maintain accurate payroll records and staff scheduling
Mentor Assistant Professionals to support both individual growth and operational success
Develop, update, and enforce Golf Shop policies, procedures, and job descriptions
Ensure all staff are educated in club policies, golf rules, and event schedules
Maintain safety standards to protect staff, members, and guests
Enforce all club rules, regulations, and operational procedures
Prepare end of month and year-end round counts and inventory reports for Director of Golf
Financials
Ensure proper controls are in place to safeguard assets, revenues, and resources
Assist in developing and managing the golf operations budget
Monitor and evaluate financial performance on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis
Support forecasting, recordkeeping, and financial planning for the golf operation
Other Facility & Departmental Responsibilities
Collaborate with department heads to achieve overall club goals and objectives
Maintain a strong working relationship with the Golf Course Superintendent to support course conditions and tournament setup
Coordinate with Food & Beverage for all golf-related events and functions
Assist the Accounting Department in reconciliations
