Senior Communications Specialist, Sustainability

Job Summary The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Sustainability (OVCS) at CU Boulder seeks a Senior Communications Specialist to support and advance sustainability communications on campus and beyond.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, Sustainability and Engagement, you will develop and execute integrated marketing strategies, create compelling written and visual content, analyze campaign performance, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams to champion CU Boulder’s sustainability initiatives.

Responsibilities

Integrated Marketing:

Plan, implement, and optimize comprehensive integrated communications and digital marketing strategies that showcase sustainability efforts across campus and to external audiences.

Work with constituent experience, strategic communications, social media, and events teams to ensure cohesive, audience‑centric marketing tactics.

Maintain and consistently update the Sustainability website with timely, audience‑appropriate content.

Segment target audiences and tailor content for optimal engagement and conversion.

Content Creation:

Draft articles, email messages, and newsletters (e.g., CU Boulder Today, Provost Post, Carnegie Elective Classification campaigns).

Coordinate interviews, photo/video shoots, and produce engaging written materials aligned with CU Boulder brand guidelines.

Manage the content calendar in partnership with the team and office‑wide schedules.

Analytics and Optimization:

Collect, analyze, and report marketing data with SRC to inform paid, earned, owned, social, content, and experiential strategies.

Use analytics tools to track campaign performance, adjust tactics, and improve return on investment.

Collaborate with SRC to evaluate campaign impact on sustainability conversions and recommend optimization tactics.

Project Support:

Perform additional duties as required, including news/media relations, paid marketing support, event assistance, crisis communications, and other strategic initiatives for OVCS.

What You Should Know

Traditional business hours (8:00 am‑5:00 pm) with occasional evening or weekend event staffing.

This role is hybrid, combining in‑person and remote work as business needs dictate.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in communications, advertising, marketing, or a related field.

3+ years of relevant professional experience coordinating communication projects or marketing campaigns for professional organizations.

Professional writing experience with a track record of concise, compelling content across various platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

3+ years of professional communication or marketing experience within higher education or sustainability contexts.

Experience facilitating collaborative work among communication professionals.

Proficiency with HTML/Drupal and customer‑relations management systems such as Salesforce.

Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat) and website maintenance.

General awareness of the higher education and institutional sustainability landscape.

Foundational understanding of sustainability concepts, including climate, energy, circularity, and equity.
