Departmental Overview The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS) leverages the research strengths of the University of California campuses at Berkeley, Davis, Merced and Santa Cruze, and operates within the greater ecosystem of the University and the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of Silicon Valley. CITRIS and the Banatao Institute facilitate interdisciplinary work among hundreds of University of California faculty members, students, corporate partners, and international institutions. Together with these public and private partners, we are shaping the future of technology in ways that cross traditional boundaries.

The Digital Communications Manager works with CITRIS management to develop and implement communications content specifically in the area of digital communications. The role updates and enforces CITRIS brand guidelines across all website, digital and print materials, ensuring each piece is on message and applies best practices. The Digital Communication Manager manages branding and digital marketing and communications for CITRIS events including conferences, symposia, hosted meetings, seminar series and special events. Also manages CITRIS social media presence via content, branding and technical support, and works with the Director of Communications to develop and manage the digital marketing campaign calendar and production of assets.

Responsibilities Web Manager/Web Content Producer

Manage the CITRIS website ecosystem (www.citris-uc.org) and associated subsidiary sites, including oversight of site updates, integration of new platforms and coordination of technical upgrades, migrations and hosting changes for the primary site and up to ten subsidiary websites.

Maintain and improve the overall structure, usability and presentation of CITRIS web platforms to ensure content is accessible, current and aligned with institutional messaging and brand standards. Provide training for content owners using the WordPress distributed publishing CMS and establish guidelines and protocols.

Develop and maintain a master content calendar and refresh cycle to ensure all website information remains current.

Track and analyze web traffic and other metrics aimed at reaching strategic communications goals and recommend evidence‑based strategies to grow audiences and meet user needs.

Produce and publish web content including research highlights, news briefs and program updates. Coordinate the development of longer‑form editorial features in collaboration with the communications director and faculty partners.

Edit and refine web content submitted by faculty, staff and partners to ensure clarity, accuracy and alignment with CITRIS messaging and editorial standards, translating complex research topics into accessible language for broader audiences.

Support external media visibility by monitoring relevant coverage and identifying opportunities to promote CITRIS research and initiatives through external outlets.

Social Media and Digital Communications

Manage the CITRIS social media presence across key platforms, using these channels primarily to build awareness of CITRIS research, programs and partnerships.

Develop and implement a coordinated social media strategy aligned with the institute's communications priorities and brand identity.

Produce and curate content highlighting faculty achievements, research initiatives, student innovation and institutional announcements.

Track and analyze engagement metrics to evaluate reach and effectiveness.

Support distribution of announcements and updates through organizational mailing lists, coordinating messaging across internal and external communications channels.

Event Communications

Lead the development of digital communications for CITRIS events and institutional initiatives and gatherings such as research showcases, workshops, conferences and leadership meetings by creating and disseminating digital materials aligned with CITRIS brand standards.

Brand Manager

Help maintain and strengthen the CITRIS visual identity across digital communications.

Work with the communications director to ensure consistency in the application of brand standards across websites, social media, events and institutional materials.

Other Duties

Provide operational support for communications initiatives across CITRIS programs and activities.

Recruit, supervise and mentor student assistants supporting communications and digital media projects.

Manage relationships with outside vendors including design, web development and other communications service providers.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, design or a related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Advanced technical skills in digital communications tools including website content management, social media platforms, email communications and digital publishing tools.

Demonstrated ability to maintain and strengthen brand identity across multiple formats including web, social media, print and event materials.

Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to communicate complex research and technical topics clearly to broad audiences.

Basic digital design and user experience skills for creating accessible, visually coherent communications materials and web content.

Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple communications initiatives simultaneously.

Familiarity with analytics tools used to track web and social media engagement.

Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across teams and institutions.

Ability to develop creative communications approaches and solve problems independently.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in an academic, research or nonprofit communications environment.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $82,800 to $116,300 yearly ($6,900.00 to $9,691.67 monthly); the full salary range for this payroll title (DIGITAL COMM SPEC 3) is $82,800 to $149,800 yearly. This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is FLSA Exempt and paid monthly.
