Departmental Overview

The Career Development Office (CDO) assists Berkeley Law’s students and alumni in shaping and attaining their short‑ and long‑term career goals. It provides individually tailored, client‑driven career counseling and builds, plans, develops, and implements professional development programs, networking events, and resources that address a full array of legal career pathways. Position Summary

The Director of Judicial Clerkships educates students and alumni about judicial clerkships and helps them explore, identify, apply for, and secure suitable or competitive clerkship opportunities at federal, state, and specialized courts. The Director builds relationships with the judiciary, coordinates judge visits, and creates or provides resources supporting clerkship placements. The Director is a member of the CDO team and may assist in maintaining current employer relationships and engaging in employer outreach to cultivate new connections for students. Responsibilities

Research, design, and develop workshops and programs to meet students’ and alumni’s career needs. Analyze the current state of competitive judicial clerkships and the legal job market to develop programming. Identify existing or emerging clerkship opportunities, assess their feasibility, and explore alternatives if necessary. Manage program improvement processes, including revisions, changes, and adjustments to existing clerkship services. Develop and implement entirely new services, programs, and resources as needed. Liaise with other teams to understand clerkship needs and collaborate on course design and development. Develop and oversee broad, complex career‑focused programs and events that incorporate campus partners’ needs. Provide one‑on‑one or group counseling for complex areas, such as tailored guidance for JD students pursuing clerkships. Establish new relationships with judiciary staff and related organizations to enhance the campus’s ties to the judiciary and external entities. Participate in or partner with local and national recruitment associations and legal organizations. Oversee career program technical systems, build applications, and improve websites and supporting technologies. Present sensitive and difficult information about the program, including to the media and the public. Participate in panel discussions, research, and write articles related to judicial clerkships and the legal job market. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques. Knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice, workshop and program design. Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends. Ability to design and modify software applications to meet program needs; strong presentation, verbal, written, and organizational skills. Ability to work with people from diverse cultures. Comprehensive knowledge of judges and clerkships. Excellent interpersonal and counseling skills, including the demonstrated capacity to advise and interact meaningfully with students and alumni from a variety of backgrounds. Marketing skills to help place students and alumni with appropriate judges. Skill in leveraging professional experience and networks to develop relationships with judiciary staff and former clerks. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and diplomacy. Technological and computer literacy, including familiarity with or strong interest in Symplicity, 12Twenty, OSCAR, AirTable, and other systems. Significant (3+ years) relevant experience in legal practice and/or law school administration. Advanced degree in Law, such as a Juris Doctor (JD), and/or equivalent experience or training. Preferred Qualifications

Prior judicial clerkship experience in a federal or highest appellate state court. Salary & Benefits

The university expects to pay this exempt, monthly‑paid position an annual salary in the range $100,000.00 – $112,000.00. This is an exempt monthly‑paid position. How To Apply

This position will be governed by the terms and conditions of the Student Services Advising Professionals agreement, represented by the UAW.
