Architectural Designer
Hutton Building Company | Cary, NC | Full-Time | $75,000 - $100,000
Who We Are Hutton Building Company is a design‑build custom home and renovation firm based in Cary, NC, serving the Triangle area. We handle everything in‑house, from initial design through final construction, which means our designer isn't handing drawings off to someone else and walking away. You're part of the build from first sketch to finished product.
We're a small, high‑performing team that takes on fewer projects intentionally so we can do each one right. Our clients are homeowners and investors who expect precision, professionalism, and a design partner who listens. We've built our reputation on doing exactly that.
The Role We're looking for an Architectural Designer who brings real expertise and takes ownership of the design function. You'll work directly with clients from early concept through construction documentation, collaborating daily with our project managers and pre‑construction team. You'll be in the room for the conversations that matter.
This is not a production role. We're not looking for someone to draft what other people design. We want someone who brings strong judgment, exercises initiative, and raises the quality of our work.
What You'll Do
Lead design development across all phases, from initial programming and schematic concepts through design development and construction documentation
Run client design meetings and selections appointments, guiding clients through material, finish, and specification decisions across multiple rounds
Produce construction drawings and documentation that our project managers can build from without ambiguity
Create renderings and visual presentations that communicate design intent clearly to clients
Collaborate with pre‑construction on design‑driven cost estimates and value engineering decisions
Maintain design intent through the build by staying engaged with the field team during construction
Contribute to improving our internal design process as the company grows
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture or Architectural Design
3+ years of experience in residential design, preferably custom homes or high‑end renovation
Required proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and SketchUp
Experience producing high‑quality renderings for client presentations
Working knowledge of residential building codes and construction methods; familiarity with North Carolina codes is a plus
A portfolio that demonstrates design sensibility, complete construction documents, and client‑ready renderings
Clear communicator who handles client relationships with confidence and works well without heavy oversight
Familiarity with design‑build delivery is a plus; genuine interest in how buildings get built is non‑negotiable
Bonus if you bring experience with Rhino 3D, Grasshopper, ArchiCAD, Chief Architect, Adobe Creative Suite, or Bluebeam
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive salary: $75,000 - $100,000 depending on experience
Health insurance
401(k) with company match
Paid holidays and PTO
Why This Role You’ll have direct influence over a company's design direction, not executing someone else's vision as one of many. You'll work with a team that respects craft, holds high standards, and takes pride in the finished product. The Triangle residential market is strong, our pipeline is active, and there's real room to grow here.
To Apply Submit your application here on LinkedIn. Include your portfolio with your application, demonstrating your design work, construction documents, and renderings. Applications without a portfolio will not be considered.
