Plumber (Skilled Trade Specialist II)

Overview MDOT Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) owns and operates both BWI Thurgood Marshall and Martin State Airports, serving over 27 million passengers annually. MDOT MAA is currently accepting applications for the position of Plumber (Skilled Trade Specialist II) at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport).

Responsibilities

Installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and natural gas equipment, piping, valves, and fittings in compliance with the Maryland State and International Plumbing Codes.

Installing valves and piping from ‘A’ to 12”. Installation and repairs to showers, lavatories, water closets, faucets, and urinals.

Fitting copper pipes and fittings using assorted flux, solder, and brazing materials.

Using different types of gases (e.g., MAP, acetylene) to fit and cut copper and steel pipes, and installing steel and natural gas piping using power threaders, groves, and other tools.

Troubleshooting and repairing sewage ejector pumps, motors, and controls.

This is maintenance work requiring physical exertion performed outdoors under all weather conditions or inside an MDOT MAA building. Employees may need to move objects weighing over 50 pounds, work on high poles or other elevated locations, and/or perform their job in cramped quarters, underground, or in buildings. Employees are considered essential and may be required to work rotating shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

High school graduation or equivalency certificate.

Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, with at least two years of service and repair of plumbing hardware in commercial and residential settings (e.g., faucets, water heaters, utility sinks, ejector pumps, grease interceptors, troubleshooting leaks, and using drain clearing machinery).

Selective Qualifications:

Specific knowledge, skills, or abilities required for this position if applicable.

Additional experience in skilled trades may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education, and a vocational‑technical school certificate may be substituted for one year of general experience. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non‑commissioned officer in utility repair or construction and engineering specialties may also be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.

Licenses & Certifications

Valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license and license number provided on the application.

During the probationary period, a Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required depending on equipment operated.

Airfield Operators Permit required before permanent appointment.

Additional training and certification requirements may be required to obtain and maintain permanent status.

Additional Requirements

Extensive pre‑employment security background check as required by FAA Regulation Part 107.

Availability for duty at all hours, day or night, to maintain continuous operation of a facility; call‑in and reliable communication link required.

May be exposed to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead‑based paint or chromium; may require medical testing and hazardous materials training and use of respirators.

Ability to perform maintenance work on high structures and in cramped quarters.

Subject to substance abuse testing.
