Project Plumbing / Fire Protection Designer IV

Overview You will be a member of our multi-disciplinary team and will work under the direction of a Certified Plumbing Designer or licensed engineer. Projects may include new construction and renovation in educational, healthcare, corporate, commercial and science and technology settings.

Responsibilities

Perform complex design of ductwork, piping, and equipment selection for plumbing and fire protection systems for large‑scale buildings.

Work independently across mechanical disciplines with no oversight or guidance and assist with HVAC designs as needed.

Oversee, guide, mentor, and provide technical leadership to designers and the engineering team.

Direct less experienced staff, including development and presentation of annual performance reviews.

Serve as a QA/QC reviewer and independent reviewer when necessary.

Interface effectively with clients and design team members.

Use Energy Model software for engineering complexities.

Create Revit/BIM construction drawings of plumbing and fire protection systems from schematic design through construction administration, including layout, sketches and detail drawings; model HVAC systems as required.

Specify equipment such as water heaters, plumbing fixtures, water softeners, and pumping equipment.

Review and accept selective shop drawings for compliance with specifications and contract documents.

Attend Owner, Architect, Construction Administration (OAC) meetings with a focus on project budget.

Participate or lead value engineering sessions with the Architecture/Engineering team.

Recommend improvements based on standards and processes to enhance quality, coordination, and production efficiency.

Assist with staff development: work planning, budget development, and scheduling in collaboration with the Project Manager.

Respond to RFIs and review change orders during construction document preparation.

Conduct site visits to verify existing conditions and monitor construction progress; attend construction meetings.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Associate degree in a relevant field required.

Minimum of 8+ years of related experience.

Current CPD, PE, or FPE in the United States preferred.

Strong knowledge of Life Safety Codes.

LEED accreditation preferred.

Critical thinker and highly analytical.

Ability to work independently with no oversight or guidance.

Fully qualified professional capable of high‑latitude work.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Effective client engagement skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Experience with engineering design applications (e.g., Revit, Trane Trace, Trane 3D Plus) required.

Compensation and Benefits The salary range for this position in the Boston office is $110,600 to $138,300 annually. Compensation may vary by location, experience, education, and skill level. Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
