
Purchasing Agent
Shaft Drillers, Morgantown, WV, United States
Purpose
Under the direction of the Purchasing Manager, the Purchasing Agent is responsible for sourcing and acquiring goods and services for the company by evaluating suppliers, negotiating contracts, and ensuring the best price and quality for required products, often by reviewing purchase requisitions, soliciting bids, and placing orders while adhering to company policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Purchases goods and services according to company policies and procedures.
Evaluates vendors based on price, reliability, capability, and previous transaction history.
Works with vendors to negotiate volume and cash transaction discounts and other available discounts.
Ensures that purchasing documents are complete and accurate and include appropriate and reasonable terms and conditions.
Maintains pricing histories and other vendor records.
Maintains relationships with suppliers while continually scouting for additional vendors.
Tracks supplier performance and implements improvement plans.
Seeks ways to improve and enhance the quality of products purchased and the timeliness of deliveries.
Communicates regularly with management regarding the efficient flow of goods and services affecting production.
Develops risk management procedures to mitigate losses in the event of product shortages.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
All other duties as assigned by management.
Required Skills
Ability to negotiate in a cost-transparent environment.
Ability to establish, develop, and improve vendor partnerships.
Ability to be self‑motivated and work both independently and within a team environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications and other computer programs for communication, data entry, tracking, and reporting.
Ability to travel to company warehouses, laydown yards, projects, and vendor locations.
Ability to identify supply solutions through unconventional sourcing approaches.
Problem‑solving aptitude and ability to determine solutions for the company and customers.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements
Ability to wear and properly use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.
Walk, step, climb, and otherwise move from one location on the job site to another.
Sit for long periods in a standard desk chair.
Work more than 40 hours in any given week, including weekend assignments when required.
Tolerate prolonged exposure to computer screens, mobile device screens.
Read documents and materials in hard and soft copy (with or without corrective lenses).
Walk, step, and climb stairs to access locations.
Stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, and sit for long periods.
Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs as required.
Tolerate working outdoors in all‑weather conditions.
Experience
7+ years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, and supply chain management.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline (e.g., Business Administration, Supply Chain Management). Candidates with professional experience may be considered if experience demonstrates the ability to perform the tasks listed.
Travel
Travel up to 15% annually is required.
