Responsibilities
Performs forensic assignments within the field of mechanical engineering expertise based on a scope of work and budget prepared by the consultant and agreed upon by the client in advance of performing the work Investigates how and why an incident occurred and determines whether it was a result of mechanical failure of equipment Inspects sites/products/equipment; performs analysis of commercial and non-commercial equipment; determines cause and origin of damage; performs mechanical engineering analysis and calculations; prepares sketches as required Conducts various analyses including, but not limited to, equipment and machinery design and failure; industrial incidents; product failure and liability; and materials analysis Prepares oral and written reports to document analysis, extent of loss, associated repair scope, and/or recommended remediation steps Determines and provides expert opinions. Provides expert testimony in deposition and trial as required. Manages multiple projects and works with other experts as needed Uses equations, applications, techniques, tools, and resources to analyze issues Has knowledge of and ability to understand industry and safety standards Has ability to initiate, develop, and maintain client relationships Has ability to take technical photographs, conduct investigations, document on-site conditions, oversee testing, and review documentation Required Skills and Abilities
High level of analytical skill. Work requires continual attention to detail with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, perform analysis, and draw valid conclusions in accordance with industry practices and the scientific method Able to interact and communicate with clients both (internal and external) Able to research scientific and technical principles and apply them to specific cases Able to read, understand, and analyze expert reports Able to write clearly and coherently, including reports of findings, proposals, general correspondence, budget estimates, and other technical documents Able to respond to inquiries from internal and external clients efficiently Capable of effectively presenting information to management, clients, public groups, or others as required Required Experience, Education and Certifications
B.S. Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering degree or equivalent from an accredited program Advanced degrees are highly valued F.E. exam completed P.E. licensure or ability to complete PE license within one year Minimum 5 years of experience, including knowledge of machinery and equipment Additional experience is a benefit Valid driver's license and reliable form of transportation required. Local travel by personal vehicle including transportation of tools and instruments is required Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel Requirements
Physical Demands - Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e. incident sites). Employee is required to stand, walk, sit, climb, bend, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to incident sites. Employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting inspections, speaking and interacting with clients, preparing written reports of findings, and potentially testify in deposition or trial. Clear vision and depth perception are necessary Overtime - This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch. However, our consultants are able to make their own schedules and we allow for a large amount of flexibility as long as the clients' needs are met. Occasional odd working hours may be required due to the nature of investigations Travel Requirements - This position requires up to 25% overnight travel. Most inspections are completed locally.
