Job Title: Mechanical Estimator
Job Description
The Mechanical Estimator prepares accurate and detailed cost estimates for mechanical systems on construction and industrial projects, with a focus on HVAC, plumbing, piping, and related mechanical work. This role analyzes project plans, specifications, and other documentation to determine material, labor, equipment, and time requirements, ensuring projects are financially viable and completed within budget. The position works closely with project teams, vendors, and subcontractors to support competitive bids and successful project delivery.
Responsibilities
Assist in estimating HVAC and plumbing projects under the guidance of experienced estimators.
Analyze blueprints, plans, and specifications to understand project scope and mechanical system requirements.
Prepare detailed cost estimates, including labor, materials, equipment, and other project-related expenses.
Conduct quantity takeoffs for mechanical systems and identify required materials and components.
Source materials and subcontractors, obtaining and evaluating quotes to support accurate pricing.
Interpret project documents and collaborate with vendors, subcontractors, and internal project teams to clarify requirements and resolve discrepancies.
Conduct site visits to assess existing conditions, logistical challenges, and access constraints that may impact cost and schedule.
Identify key cost factors such as materials, labor, and equipment, and propose cost‑saving options through alternative methods or value engineering.
Maintain and update cost databases and historical pricing information to improve estimating accuracy.
Support contract negotiations with subcontractors and vendors by providing detailed cost breakdowns and clarifications.
Use estimating software to quantify project requirements and produce structured, professional estimates.
Review project specifications, drawings, and addendums to ensure estimates reflect the latest project information.
Participate in site surveys for renovation or retrofit projects to gather field data and validate assumptions.
Assist in reviewing construction schedules to ensure estimates align with project timelines and phasing.
Participate in submittal reviews and assembly, ensuring mechanical products and systems meet project requirements.
Help prepare as-built drawings and close-out documentation related to mechanical systems at the end of projects.
Support construction management and field construction teams by clarifying estimate assumptions and scope as needed.
Essential Skills
Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and piping.
Experience with mechanical estimating in construction or industrial environments, including piping and mechanical system installations.
Ability to read, interpret, and analyze blueprints, mechanical drawings, and project specifications.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation, reporting, and estimate preparation.
Strong organizational and documentation skills to manage multiple projects, maintain records, and track changes.
Minimum of four years of college in an engineering‑related field or equivalent technical education.
Minimum of four years of on‑the‑job training or experience in mechanical estimating.
Familiarity with construction management principles and field construction processes.
Understanding of MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) coordination in civil construction projects.
Ability to use or learn estimating software to quantify project requirements and generate detailed estimates.
Capability to perform quantity takeoffs and develop accurate labor, material, and equipment cost breakdowns.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Exposure to industrial projects and mechanical systems in industrial facilities.
Knowledge of HVAC systems, pipe installation practices, and general construction methods.
Experience working with hand tools and an understanding of how mechanical work is performed in the field.
Familiarity with construction scheduling concepts and how schedule impacts project cost.
Ability to participate in submittal preparation, review, and assembly for mechanical equipment and materials.
Experience assisting with as-built drawings and close-out documentation for mechanical scopes of work.
Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with project teams, vendors, and subcontractors.
Willingness to work a minimum of 10 hours a day, five to six days a week, as project demands require.
Work Environment This role operates primarily in an office environment with frequent interaction with project teams, vendors, and subcontractors, using computers, estimating software, and Microsoft Office applications to prepare and manage estimates. The position also requires regular visits to construction and industrial sites to conduct surveys, assess existing conditions, and support field teams, which may involve exposure to active construction areas and the need to follow appropriate safety practices and wear standard construction site attire and personal protective equipment. Work hours are typically extended, with an expectation of a minimum of 10 hours per day, five to six days per week, to meet project deadlines and support competitive bidding and project delivery.
Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Memphis, TN.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $47.50/hr.
