Position Summary
The Logistics & Trade Compliance Specialist I is responsible for ensuring accurate product classification, tariff determination, and compliance with international customs regulations. This role supports import/export operations by analyzing product data, applying correct Harmonized System (HS) and Schedule B codes, and staying current with global tariff changes. The role works closely with supply chain, trade compliance, logistics, and procurement teams to minimize duty exposure, optimize trade opportunities, and prevent compliance risk.
Essential Functions
Product Classification: Classify goods using HS, HTSUS, Schedule B, and other country‑specific tariff systems.
Research and interpret customs rulings, binding classifications, and regulatory guidelines.
Maintain and update internal classification databases to ensure consistency and accuracy.
Review product specifications, engineering drawings, and technical documents to determine correct classification assignments.
Trade Compliance Support: Ensure compliance with customs laws, free trade agreements, and duty‑relief programs.
Stay informed of global tariff changes, trade remedies, Section 301/232 duties, and temporary exclusions.
Manage classification data within ERP, GTS, or other trade compliance systems.
Utilize customs databases, government portals, and trade reference tools for research and validation.
Documentation & Recordkeeping: Prepare and maintain classification rationales and audit‑ready documentation.
Assist with internal audits, compliance reviews, and responses to customs inquiries.
Partner with supply chain, logistics, procurement, engineering, and compliance teams to ensure accurate trade data across systems.
Provide training to internal teams on classification processes, tariff rules, and trade compliance updates.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required by management.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or supply chain is preferred.
2‑5 years of experience in customs classification or trade compliance is required.
Strong working knowledge of HS/HTS/Schedule B codes is required.
Familiarity with U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) regulations and international tariff structures is required.
Previous training in import/export documentation & compliance and in U.S. export controls required.
Skills
Able to find, read, and interpret relevant business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures/product information, or governmental regulations.
Able to write reports and business correspondence in a professional manner.
Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Able to follow written and verbal directions and communicate new information that could affect project trajectories.
Math & Computer
Can calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, especially related to formulas and equations related to import/export sales.
Can perform intermediate PC functions in Microsoft Office Suite and Quote Writer.
Abilities
Deal with problems involving a variety of variables in non‑standard situations.
Apply strong analytical, research, and documentation skills to evaluate information, develop accurate conclusions, and maintain clear, well‑supported records.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to interpret technical product information.
Read and understand specs.
Work professionally with customers/dealerships and internal customers to accomplish common goals.
Prioritize work and multitask while adhering to deadlines.
Work with minimal supervision in a team environment.
Understand and follow all safety policies to promote a safe working environment for all.
Other Qualifications
Driving license required.
May need to travel off site for tradeshows, meetings, or company related events.
Ability to work evenings and/or weekends occasionally as needed.
Travel requirements: local, overnight, prolonged periods.
