40 hours per week
Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:30pm
(Note: Must be flexible to accommodate last‑minute schedule changes for the Children's Department staffing needs.)
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Master's Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school with comprehensive knowledge of Children's Services in a public library and three years of supervisory experience. Must pass pre‑employment testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Staysinformed of the needs and interests of families and children, birth through agetwelve, through library patron interactions and reading of current journals,websites and literature to ensure creative and innovative programs that meetthe needs of children
Developobjectives and key results for Children's Services for the SCPL system
Clearly communicates SCPL’sphilosophy of Children's Services and Palmetto Basics concepts to staff
Supervisesand interviews all staff within the Children's Department
Regularlymeets with librarians and children assistants around the system to provideguidance and help with planning to ensure attractive, dynamic, welcomingprograms and spaces for children at all locations
Chairsthe Children's Services Committee, leading conversations about services forchildren, soliciting feedback and providing opportunities for sharing and staffdevelopment training
Overseethe Children's Services programming budget that covers Summer Reading, PalmettoBasics and Children's programming for Headquarters
Preparesmonthly, quarterly and annual reports related to programming and budgets forchildren
Build community relationships,attending meetings and connecting with local services for children outside ofthe library
Stays current on literature forchildren keeping up with trends and providing input to the Youth ServicesCollection Development Librarian
RepresentsSCPL at conferences and attends conferences, training and social events relatedto Children to remain current on local and national discussions related toChildren’s Services
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Master'sDegree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school withcomprehensive knowledge of Children's Services in a public library and threeyears of supervisory experience
Comprehensiveknowledge of children's literature
Thoroughknowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials andpractices with three years of public library experience and supervisoryexperience

Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficient withtechnology
Ability to establishdeadlines, monitor progress, and work well with a team
