Director, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center — Washington, DC The Asian Pacific American Center (APAC) seeks a Director to lead the organization in achieving its goal of establishing a dedicated space on the National Mall to feature the stories of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) as reflected across Smithsonian collections. The Director will represent and enhance public understanding of the heritage of Asian & Pacific Island Americans and their contributions to the American experience, world cultures, and humanity. The Director will also serve as the external face of APAC, inspiring confidence in its capabilities and raising its profile as a distinctive national asset and source of programming. APAC serves as a vibrant national resource, elevating the AANHPI experience through impactful initiatives, dynamic programming, immersive experiences, and inclusive engagement. Through education initiatives and exhibitions, APAC celebrates the diverse AANHPI cultures, histories, and artistic productions that enrich American life. APAC has a multi-year goal of raising $63 million to ensure financial stability, including $20M for the current Smithsonian campaign, For Our Shared Future. The Keystone Initiative envisions the first-ever dedicated AANHPI gallery on the National Mall. APAC also seeks funding to endow the director and head of education positions. The Director has responsibility for the overall planning, development, direction, and management of all programs and activities of APAC. The Director is appointed by the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and reports on all matters relating to APAC through the Under Secretary for Museums & Culture. The Director confers with and consults an Advisory Board appointed by the Smithsonian Institution Board of Regents. Provides vision and leadership for the representation of the Asian American experience at the Smithsonian and through directing APAC; advises the Secretary, Under Secretary for Museums & Culture, and others; collaborates with colleagues; and strategically implements scholarly and educational activities that realize that vision. Directs APAC with responsibility for scholarly activities, exhibitions (physical and virtual), educational and public programs, online presence, staff development, advisory board, partnerships, volunteers, and fiscal resources, ensuring compliance with Smithsonian policies, plans, and procedures. Raises funds for APAC activities by developing relationships with corporate and philanthropic sectors, applying for government and foundation grants, and collaborating with the central Office of Advancement as appropriate. Develops and maintains a distinguished advisory board of public officials and leaders to support programs and national representation of Asian and Pacific American achievement in history, arts, culture, science, and technology. Develops and maintains scholarly and educational relations with other Smithsonian museums, centers, and programs; seeks collaborative projects and initiatives; supports joint appointments, exhibitions, programs, websites, and publications; manages pan-institutional funds and initiatives for Asian Pacific American projects. Promotes institutional partnerships with museums, universities, and community organizations; develops strategies to increase Asian and Pacific American candidate pools for Smithsonian employment; facilitates training opportunities, internships, and fellowships. Serves as primary liaison within the Smithsonian to Asian and Pacific American community groups, national organizations, scholarly associations, academic departments, and other organizations; represents APAC and its needs to government relations and policy offices. Builds public awareness of all Smithsonian Asian and Pacific American programs and activities; collaborates with the Office of Public Affairs as appropriate. Maintains scholarly or professional standing by conducting research, publishing, or presenting on Asian and Pacific American topics. Candidate Profile
The Director will typically hold a bachelor’s degree in an applicable field and have senior-level leadership experience in a museum, cultural institution, or education environment with public programs, exhibitions, collections, scholarly research, policy work, or related development activity. An advanced degree is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have at least 10 years of experience leading a multi-disciplinary, complex organization or a significant department/division within a larger entity. Compensation & Benefits Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $300,000 - $400,000 with a generous benefits package.
