
Director of Planned Giving

Position Summary:
The Director of Planned Giving is responsible for overseeing the day‑to‑day management of the Planned Giving staff. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Planned Giving, the Director oversees the marketing and stewardship functions, and serves as the Planned Giving liaison to Legal and Finance for estates that are in administration. The Director will also hold a portfolio of major gift prospects.
Essential Functions:
Manage the day‑to‑day operations of a team of two (the Estate & Planned Giving Manager and the Marketing & Stewardship Manager)
Oversee the Estate Administration process and provide support for complex matters that require legal or technical background and experience.
Ensure timely and compliant processing of all open estates, acting as the liaison to Legal and Finance for matters of estate administration.
Oversee the strategic direction and messaging of the Planned Giving Marketing Program and stewardship of 1,000+ members in the Mary & Wallace Stegner Society.
Manage a portfolio of 50 planned giving prospects at the major gift level and serve as a liaison to Relationship Managers in Field Philanthropy.
50% Working with the Planned Giving Team and partnering with Relationship Managers across the organization, the Director will prospect for new planned giving donors, as well as cultivate, solicit and confirm new planned gifts, using research, discovery calls, meetings, and other standard prospecting techniques.
25% Foster collaboration within the Planned Giving Team and with the Marketing & Communications Department and Donor Relations Team to develop comprehensive marketing and stewardship strategies as well as providing leadership and guidance to the Marketing & Stewardship Manager.
25% Manage the estate administration process and liaise with TPL’s Legal, Finance, and Gift Administration Departments as well as the outside financial firm, TIAA Kaspick, that administers our life income programs.
Qualifications:
Strong commitment to TPL’s shared values (Belonging, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Hope) to effectively work across the organization.
Law degree or an equivalent of a minimum of 10 years’ experience in fundraising for a nonprofit organization; planned giving, marketing and stewardship experience required. Experience in law, tax, trusts & estates or wealth management also considered as equivalent experience.
Experience managing professional staff.
Demonstrated track record of closing a variety of types of planned gifts.
Comprehensive knowledge of planned giving principals, vehicles, and best practices.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a donor‑centric approach.
High level of attention to detail with a demonstrated track record of accuracy in work product.
Knowledge of PG Calc or Crescendo and experience presenting comparative gift illustrations and proposals to donors and their professional advisors.
Self‑motivation, detail orientation, follow through.
Willingness to travel.
