Overview

The Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health (SNAMHS) is recruiting for a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist 1 (TRS 1) for Stein Forensic Hospital. The TRS 1 is responsible for planning, organizing, and facilitating therapeutic recreation programs at Stein Forensic Hospital and SNAMHS with a focus on supporting rehabilitation and overall well-being through structured and engaging activities. Primarily working with clients in forensic units, the TRS 1 tailors recreation therapy to meet the unique needs of forensic populations. This includes evaluating clients\' strengths, interests, and challenges; reviewing medical records; and consulting with medical staff to address physical or mental barriers. They design and implement therapeutic activities, conduct individual and group sessions, and adapt programs or equipment for special needs. Additionally, the TRS 1 maintains accurate documentation through assessments, treatment plans, and DAP-style progress notes to ensure individualized, effective care. Responsibilities Plan, organize, schedule, coordinate and conduct a wide variety of therapeutic activities including, but not limited to basketball, volleyball, pool, ping-pong and strength training as well as passive recreation such as board games, cards and puzzles.

Provide skill training, encouragement and counseling; modify, adapt and fabricate equipment to accommodate special needs; schedule and conduct individual and group therapy sessions in areas such as assertiveness training, relaxation techniques, stress management, self-esteem, wellness, leisure education, social skills, task concentration and others as assigned.

Observe individuals during activities to evaluate performance and leisure skill development, compare level of functioning to baseline, assess progress toward treatment goals, modify activities to accommodate individual needs, and document progress and incidents.

Assess and document individual progress in meeting treatment goals; record progress notes and revise treatment recommendations; attend interdisciplinary treatment team meetings to provide input regarding progress and goals.

Assist in developing recreation and leisure activity resources; research programs; manage the recreation budget; purchase supplies and materials; repair or arrange repair of equipment.

Supervise technicians, forensics and other assistants; provide training in basic treatment modalities; assign and review work; participate in maintenance, setup and storage of recreation equipment.

Assist individuals in pursuing enjoyable and healthy leisure activities in the least restrictive environment possible.

Observe established health and safety procedures to ensure the safety of program participants.

Develop and implement therapeutic recreation activities and programs in correctional, rehabilitative, mental health, intellectual and/or developmental disability or residential settings.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Bachelor\'s degree from an accredited college or university in therapeutic recreation, recreation, or a specialty area (e.g., art, dance, music, physical education) and one year of technical experience in recreation therapy in a clinical, residential, community-based and/or correctional environment; OR certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Ability to interview individuals to assess recreational interests and physical, mental and/or emotional limitations; review medical records and confer with medical personnel regarding physical disabilities, injuries or other medical conditions; evaluate individual needs and strengths; prepare treatment plans and document prescribed activities within resource and security constraints.

Ability to plan, organize, schedule and conduct a wide range of therapeutic recreation activities; adapt, create, and design activities and equipment to meet client needs; move and set up equipment; coordinate services with other therapeutic disciplines; provide therapy in potentially hostile environments; lead a variety of activities; counsel, train and motivate clients; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; administer first aid in emergencies; operate a vehicle to transport clients as required.
