Caring. Connecting. Growing together.
This role is contractually required as part of our agreement with Brighton Health, which is a TPA through Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) to dedicate a full-time underwriter to support reseller underwriting activity.
Underwriting in this context involves high variability in group data and plan design, necessitating critical thinking, judgment, and scenario-based decision-making that cannot be effectively replicated through automation.
This position must remain onshore due to multiple factors:
Client-facing responsibilities: The underwriter may engage directly with account executives and occasionally clients
Contractual obligation: The Brighton MSA thru BCBS NC contract implicitly requires onshore support
PHI and regulatory sensitivity
Responsiveness and turnaround times: The need for real-time coordination with sales and underwriting teams requires co-location in U.S. time zones to meet SLAs
You’ll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities
Prepare financial experience rating calculations and other ongoing financial reviews that directly align with client strategies
Validate renewals and requests for proposals for accuracy including utilization and experience reporting
Evaluate and negotiate potential alternatives and options for New Business and Renewal groups with internal and external customers
Collaborate with the Sales and Account Management teams to project pricing and profitability and participate in the development of the business strategy
Support all requests associated with designated account(s) including annual renewal preparation, ad‑hoc reporting, consultation, etc.
Required Qualifications
2+ years of experience in healthcare underwriting for any variety of products: PPO, HMO, self‑funded, ASO/fully‑insured, group or individual
Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
Proven excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing and solid negotiation skills
Proven solid analytical, problem‑solving and critical decision‑making skills
*All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter Policy
Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far‑reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $72,800 to $130,000 annually based on full‑time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
