Overview Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Coordinator plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing Michigan United’s communications strategy. This position balances earned media efforts, digital content development, and crisis management. The Coordinator works collaboratively across departments to amplify the organization’s message, engage supporters, and strengthen Michigan United’s position in advocacy and social justice.

Position Details and Responsibilities

Earned Media

Generate press releases and media advisories, make pitch calls, and develop relationships with various media outlets across the state.

Identify compelling stories about the organization, its staff, and its impact, and pitch them to media outlets to generate positive coverage.

Organize and execute press events, including press conferences, media briefings, and on-the-ground opportunities to highlight campaigns and initiatives.

Track and catalogue press coverage.

Assist with implementing crisis communications protocols for the organization.

Digital Organizing and Content Development

Write and post updates to the organization’s website using WordPress.

Develop content, including graphics, and assist in posting and maintaining social media content across platforms such as Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, LinkedIn, Mobilize.

Produce and edit photo and video content for digital campaigns, social media, and event coverage.

Live stream events across multiple platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter/X, Twitch, StreamYard).

Utilize digital engagement to inspire supporters to take action.

Assist in writing emails and creating action pages on the EveryAction platform.

Help produce newsletters for members and leaders.

Provide regular analysis reports and goals on social media metrics.

Monitor web and social media trends and stay up-to-date on best practices.

Design organizational collateral using Canva (graphics, flyers, kicker cards).

Assist with training MU leaders, staff, and volunteers on social media best practices.

Create and implement a monthly social media calendar that is current and proactive.

Communications Stability

Work with the Communications Director to develop and refine messaging for Michigan United campaigns.

Stay current on issues vital to affected communities and the political landscape.

Build relationships with current and prospective members to deepen participation in the communications program.

Develop talking points and key messaging to ensure consistency in public communications.

Prepare speakers for events, press interviews, and public appearances aligned with organizational messaging.

Fundraising

Develop content to increase fundraising and donations to MU.

Qualifications

Passionate about economic and racial justice, aligned with Michigan United's vision and Theory of Change.

Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.

Proven experience in media relations, digital content creation, graphic design, social media management, SEO, email marketing, and web design.

Proficiency with digital platforms and tools, including WordPress, EveryAction, Canva, Asana, Mobilize, and major social media platforms.

Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and handle crisis situations with poise.

Proactive and self-motivated, able to take initiative and drive projects forward with limited supervision.

Additional Job Specifications

Job Classification: FLSA — Non-Exempt

Job Length: Regular, Full-time

Compensation: $50,000

Work Schedule: 40 hours, Primarily Weekdays with Some Evenings / Weekends

Location: Hybrid (On-site & Virtual); must be based in the state of Michigan

Benefits: Health, Vision, Dental, PTO, 401K, Discretionary Year-End Contributions, etc.
