About the Position VHB's Metro DC operations is seeking a Director of Transit & Rail Engineering to work in our rapidly growing Metro DC market from either our Tysons, Virginia or Washington, DC office locations.
This role will manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers and designers in the development of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for a variety of rail and transit infrastructure projects, including conceptual, preliminary, and final design involving light rail transit, bus rapid transit, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, and freight rail improvements.
In this role, you would join a group delivering some of the most transformative transit and railroad projects across the region while overseeing project delivery and supporting business development. Project delivery services will include leading complex transit and railroad projects from the early planning phase through construction and implementation. The business development efforts will include client management and maintenance, identifying new opportunities, and supporting major project pursuits. Typical projects involve commuter rail, light rail transit, heavy rail, bus and bus rapid transit, intercity passenger rail, and freight rail services.
Responsibilities
Oversee a multidisciplinary team of engineers and planners
Take an active role in the development and mentoring of the Transit & Rail group
Manage multiple, simultaneous efforts including projects of various types and complexity
Develop, manage and maintain project schedules and budgets
Lead development of project deliverables and provide quality control
Work directly with client project manager and maintain a good relationship
Manage financial progress through timely submittal of invoices and progress reports and initiation of change orders for out‑of‑scope services
Prepare technical reports and analyses
Prepare and maintain project staffing resource plans
Take an active role in business development and identify prospective opportunities
Represent VHB at regional conferences, seminars and industry events
Manage and prepare technical and cost proposals
Prepare and deliver technical presentations
Support business development efforts through an emphasis on advance positioning and early identification of strategic pursuits
Coordinate on teaming decisions with Corporate and Regional Leaders
Assist in the development of business and marketing plans
Work with the local leadership team to assign and manage workload
Work to continuously enhance the VHB Transit & Rail brand and to achieve industry excellence and consistency
Skills & Abilities
Proven ability to coordinate with interdisciplinary teams such as Planning, Architecture, Environmental, Structural, Civil, and Traffic Engineering.
Strong understanding of transit and rail infrastructure and multidiscipline system integration
Technical expertise in multiple rail design disciplines (track, grade crossings, stations structures, transit facilities, route design)
Experience in understanding NEPA
Excellent technical written and verbal communication skills and analytical skills
Excellent public speaking skills and business development skills
Excellent project management skills
Strong capability in use of computer applications including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Capability in the use of project management applications such as MS Project or Primavera
Minimum Requirements
BS in Civil Engineering or related field; Masters degree preferred
15 years of progressive technical experience in transit and rail engineering and implementation
PE license in Virginia, Maryland, DC, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
Minimum of 10 years serving as a Project Manager
Proven ability to manage a multidisciplinary team
The base salary range for this position is $176,000 - $230,000 for the Washington, DC location. This offer is determined based on a number of job‑related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
