Director of Transportation Engineering
VHB is seeking an experienced Director of Transportation Engineering to lead and grow our transportation practice across the Orlando and Tampa offices. This strategic leadership position will oversee multidisciplinary transportation teams across the region, driving growth, strengthening client relationships, and ensuring resource alignment to deliver high-quality solutions.
The successful candidate will have deep expertise in delivering transportation engineering and planning projects for public and private sector clients and will play a central role in helping VHB's leadership execute the firm's strategic plan across multiple Florida markets. This position will lead efforts to expand market share in Central Florida while fostering collaboration, shared resources, and strategic pursuit alignment with the Gulf Coast offices.
Our combined Orlando and Gulf Coast transportation teams offer a diverse range of services – roadway design, traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), structures, transit planning, and PD&E studies – creating a robust platform for delivering integrated, cross-office solutions.
Responsibilities
Lead, manage, and develop high-performing transportation teams in both Orlando and Gulf Coast offices.
Drive market growth in Central Florida and the Gulf Coast, identifying opportunities that leverage shared resources and expertise.
Generate new business development opportunities and lead high-profile pursuits across both markets.
Collaborate with local, regional, and corporate leadership to define and execute strategies aligned with VHB's strategic plan.
Participate in go
o‑go and partnering decisions on strategic pursuits.
Maintain and grow relationships with key clients and oversee major project assignments.
Serve as Principal‑in‑Charge on select projects, providing leadership and technical oversight.
Develop annual business plans for both regions' transportation practices, ensuring alignment and coordinated execution.
Skills and Abilities
Proven track record in successfully leading multiple offices or teams across geographic regions.
Strong financial management skills with experience delivering profitable, sustainable results.
Broad expertise in transportation engineering and planning, covering both public and private sectors.
Excellent collaboration skills and the ability to mentor staff while managing complex, multi‑disciplinary projects.
Superior ability in collaborative problem‑solving with stakeholders, clients, and internal teams.
Highly motivated, self‑starter with exceptional presentation and communication skills.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation planning, or a related field (Master's preferred).
15+ years of relevant experience in transportation engineering and/or planning.
Florida Professional Engineer (PE) license required; AICP certification desirable or ability to obtain.
Demonstrated experience managing staff across multiple offices or teams.
Strong marketing experience with measurable results.
Established relationships with public and private sector clients (state, county, local agencies, and developers).
