Education

  • Completion of a Registered Vascular Sonographer accredited program with attainment of the RVT designation.
  • Associate’s Degree or higher required.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Healthcare Provider (CPR Certification).
  • Certification from ARDMS as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT).
  • Demonstrated competence in the specialty area(s), including sonographer certification by ARDMS, ARRT, or CCI.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of vascular experience preferred, with proficiency in all aspects of vascular testing.
  • Experience with vascular laboratory leadership preferred.

Skills

  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and families who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Communication skills to exchange information with fellow professionals, non-professionals, and ancillary personnel.
  • Analytical skills necessary to determine the best method of providing requested ultrasound exams based on the specifics of individual cases.
  • Ability to detect pathology based on knowledge of physiologic causes and effects of disease.
  • Ability to educate rotating ultrasonography students and mentor early career staff within the department.
  • Understanding of ICAVAL protocol and accreditation.
  • Ability to accrue vascular lab data.
  • Serve as QI/QA liaison to confer closely with the Medical Director.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform all phases of vascular ultrasound examinations with a high degree of technical aptitude and in-depth knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology.
  • Recognize significance of all structures visualized and differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes.
  • Conduct routine measurements and calculations.
  • Provide extensive education, training, and experience in the specialty area(s) to be performed.
  • Mentor and support staff sonographers.
  • Commit to professional growth and lifelong learning through continuing medical education, higher education, research, and staff training.

Performance of Sonography – Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols.
  • Assume responsibility for patient safety during the sonographic examination.
  • Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information.
  • Ensure the sonography examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of medical necessity.
  • Evaluate contraindications, insufficient preparation, or patient inability to tolerate the examination.
  • Communicate appropriately with patients.
  • Use proper positioning, tools, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques.
  • Perform the diagnostic medical sonography examination ordered by the supervising physician.
  • Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment and critical thinking to safely perform procedures.
  • Document findings, identify limitations, and prepare preliminary findings.
  • Refer specific diagnostic questions to the appropriate physician as authorized by policy.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and facility policies.
  • Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards.

Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement – Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensure sonography examination results meet facility quality assurance standards before release.
  • Oversee assessment of examinations for technical and image quality, and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director to ensure quality patient care.
  • Lead the creation, oversight, and implementation of scanning protocols and quality control activities.
  • Maintain appropriate accreditation.

Equipment Use & Maintenance – Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform quality control procedures to ensure ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels.
  • Ensure equipment functions accurately.
  • Provide education and training to sonographers on new equipment features and scanning techniques.
  • Maintain a preventive maintenance program.

Supervision and Management – Primary Responsibilities

  • Operate day‑to‑day sonography services within the facility.
  • Provide general supervision and evaluation of sonographer staff.
  • Ensure staff compliance with clinical and operational protocols.
  • Ensure timely access to equipment, supplies, and logistical support.
  • Assist with department workflow, workload scheduling, and staff orientation.

Pay Range

$43.39 – $78.10
