
Senior Account Clerk

SENIOR ACCOUNT CLERK (PART TIME) The Valley Central School District is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Senior Account Clerk in the Business Office. This is a part-time, competitive civil service position. Open until filled.
POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Business, the Senior Account Clerk performs varied and complex clerical work in connection with account-keeping and the financial accounting process for the school district. This position requires a general understanding of school district financial operations, accounting principles, and established procedures and policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Classifies receipts and expenditures and distributes items according to established procedures
Reviews and verifies account-keeping records and reports for accuracy and completeness
Verifies and reconciles account balances according to prescribed procedures
Processes remittances, verifies amounts, computes interest and penalties, and prepares bank deposits
Issues receipts and confirmations for monies received
Posts transactions from various source documents and prepares routine financial reports
Compiles and prepares cost records and reports for labor, materials, and operations
Prepares and distributes checks according to established procedures
Processes, sorts, records, and files control records and reports
Operates computing, calculating, check writing, and other standard office equipment
Prepares routine correspondence on matters where policies and procedures are clearly defined
May assist with payroll processing including verifications and computations
May assist in budget preparation and maintenance of budget controls
May assign and review work of clerical staff and provide training on account-keeping tasks
Performs related clerical duties including typing, filing, and general office work as needed
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalency diploma
Two (2) years of clerical experience involving the maintenance or auditing of financial accounts or records
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Good knowledge of financial accounting and record-keeping practices
Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment
Good knowledge of business arithmetic and English
Good knowledge of word processing and basic spreadsheet programs
Ability to maintain accurate financial accounts
Ability to follow complex oral and written directions
Ability to prepare correspondence and reports
Ability to operate computerized account-keeping systems
Ability to organize and prioritize varied assignments
Ability to lead and direct the work of others
Strong clerical aptitude and initiative
Good judgment and attention to detail
Physical condition appropriate to the demands of the position
CIVIL SERVICE REQUIREMENTS This is a competitive class position (Title #1578). Candidates may also be eligible under the NYHELPS program or be eligible to transfer under civil service law.
