Requirements

Bilingual

in English and Spanish (reading, writing, speaking, comprehension)

Minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent, plus two years of employment experience in the child welfare field planning activities for children and/or adolescents.

Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and vehicle insurance.

Proof of immunity to vaccine‑preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route (varicella, MMR, DTaP/TDap, influenza).

Proof of immunization: Varicella—two doses at least 4 weeks apart or documented history/​titer; MMR—two doses or titer; DTaP/TDap—completed primary series and booster if needed; Influenza—annual dose during flu season.

Job Summary Under the general direction of the Assistant Program Director, the Recreation Specialist is responsible for coordinating and implementing daily recreational activities for UAC in accordance with agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards and ORR Policy. The role includes ensuring a safe, clean and organized environment for structured and unstructured activities that enhance quality of life for UAC, support pro‑social behaviors, and promote acculturation.

Position Responsibilities

Design, schedule and facilitate age‑appropriate activities for residents, including cultural and spiritual activities.

Provide educational services in a trauma‑informed manner.

Ensure UAC receive at least one hour per day of outdoor, unstructured leisure activities and one hour per day of structured activity (up to three hours on weekends and holidays).

Create a monthly recreation calendar with cultural and spiritual activities.

Maintain recreational supplies and equipment inventory.

Ensure necessary supplies, equipment, directions and instructions are available for all activities.

Recruit, train and monitor volunteers with specialized skills to share with residents.

Collaborate with community organizations for special activities and events.

Co‑ordinate with domestic services for campus‑wide activities.

Schedule at least one off‑campus recreational field trip per month and serve as chaperone, maintaining a 4:1 staff ratio.

Assist with ratio and supervision of UAC during structured recreation activities.

Create and distribute weekly recreation logs; ensure timely completion and accurate records.

Implement the program’s token economy and behavior incentive system (“La Tiendita”).

Participate in enhancement and improvement of the living and working environment.

Attend staff meetings, retreats and team‑building activities.

Exhibit cultural sensitivity and knowledge of values and heritage.

Maintain safety training and protocols; safeguard confidentiality of client and organizational information.

Adhere to the Code of Conduct and Faith and Morals Policy.

Apply a solution‑oriented approach and promote teamwork and commitment to the organization’s Mission and Vision.

Complete a 10‑day New Employee Orientation; failure to complete will result in termination.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences, human services, or social services; OR

Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, plus two years’ experience in the child welfare field.

Experience:

Minimum one year working with children and/or adolescents in a social service setting.

License and Credentials:

Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and vehicle insurance.

Knowledge and Skills

Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize duties, and manage responsibilities.

Travel and Physical Requirements

Travel: 0% local, 0% overnight.
