Summary
Plans, organizes, and coordinates services for a variety of athletic activities, leagues, camps, events, and programs for a diverse community population that includes but is not limited to youth, adults, adaptive, and senior adults. Requires the additional responsibility of on-site management of athletic programs and staff; specifically for sports leagues including, but not limited to, flag football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softball Distinguishing Career Features
The Sr. Athletics Programs Specialist is the third level in a career path for implementing athletic programs and services, and a supervisory management position that coordinates a variety of specific athletic programs and services for the community at large. The Sr. Athletics Programs Specialist will demonstrate the ability to implement and oversee athletic leagues, camps, programs, and events according to exact schedules, and oversee and train staff and volunteers. The next stage in career advance is to Athletic Programs Coordinator or Athletic Facilities and Field Coordinator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plans and implements athletic leagues, camps, and programs. Consults with Athletics Specialists and Athletics Coordinator to determine program needs. Prepares program agenda and schedules and provides support to Athletic Specialists and Athletics Coordinator. Provides on-site management and coordination of athletic programs, services, and staff. Specifically for leagues including, but not limited to, flag football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softball. Implements athletic division and department operating procedures and policies. Trains and develops athletics staff to officiate and lead quality athletic programs. Athletic programs include, but are not limited to, flag football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softball. Monitors the work of seasonal athletic assistants, attendants, and volunteers involved in providing athletic programs and services. Communicates with Athletics Coordinator on issues related to the operation of athletic programs and services. Completes Daily League Reports for all athletic leagues and games. Conducts pre-game facility inspections and athletic staff meetings. Assigns athletic staff to league games and camp activities. Acts as a facilitator for any disputes on site during athletic leagues and programs. Receives, investigates, and resolves participant, volunteer, staff, citizen, and community inquiries, concerns, and issues. Participates in developing division-level budgets, specifically those for athletic programs and services. Assists with reviews, edits, and coordinating of scheduling and rules for athletic leagues.Assists with overseeing updating of athletic league standings and development of playoff and tournament brackets. Assist with coordinating athletic league(s) registration for teams, individuals, and volunteer coaches, including but not limited to, team packages, waiver forms, volunteer coach application, copy of birth certificates, and rosters. Communicates regularly on-site with volunteer coaches, parents, and community members regarding athletic programs and services. Research new and innovative athletic programs, services, and trends and adapts and introduces programs to meet community needs.

The position requires specialized knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, techniques, and procedures governing recreational and athletic program origination, selection, design, and delivery. Requires knowledge of the trends in the field of recreation, athletics, and leisure activity programs. Requires knowledge of research design and data collection methods for identifying program demand and trends. Requires working knowledge of the rules associated with team play in a variety of athletics. Requires working knowledge of the procedures used in establishing optimal facility use schedules. Requires working knowledge of age-appropriate human development concepts. Requires knowledge of safety requirements applicable to leading individuals in recreational and athletic activity. Requires knowledge of personal computers sufficient to access and use common office productivity software. Requires sufficient math skills to prepare cost and data summaries. Requires well-developed language skills to write course descriptions and promotional materials. Requires well-developed human relation skills to convey concepts and conduct training and use courtesy when dealing with others.

Requires the ability to conduct recreational needs assessment to identify potential recreational and athletic programs, leagues, and services. Requires the ability to develop and apply the rules, regulations, policies and procedures used by the department in connection with recreational and athletic activity. Requires the ability to facilitate activities with small and large groups in a variety of recreational and athletic programs. Requires the ability to coordinate and participate and partner with other community organizations to design and implement programs. Requires the ability to prepare complete, accurate, and concise written reports and correspondence. Requires the ability to work cooperatively with community members of diverse age groups and abilities. Requires the ability to work as a contributing member of a team, work productively and cooperatively with other teams and external customers and convey a positive image of the City.

Must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors in a sports court, park trail or similar environment engaged in work of primarily a moderately active nature. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand, walk and demonstrate activities on an intermittent basis, lift and move medium weight materials up to 50 pounds, and move to various work locations. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity to demonstrate physical activities and use a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and customers in one-on-one and small group settings. Requires visual acuity to read printed materials and labels.
