Stein Sperling is seeking a Director of Marketing & Business Development to serve as a strategic leader responsible for elevating the firm's brand, driving revenue growth, and positioning the firm for long-term success in a competitive legal marketplace. This highly visible leadership role requires a creative, innovative thinker who can develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies while building and managing a high-performing team. The ideal candidate will bring a results-oriented mindset, a passion for innovation, and a proven track record of delivering sustainable, measurable ROI across integrated marketing channels.

This position reports to firm leadership and works closely with practice group leaders, attorneys, and administrative leadership to align marketing and business development initiatives with the firm's strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Strengthen relationships with key clients and develop targeted initiatives to attract new clients and expand market share across geographies, practice groups, and industry sectors.
  • Develop and execute the firm's comprehensive marketing and business development strategy, including annual planning, goal setting, and resource allocation to drive sustainable growth.
  • Partner with firm leadership to align marketing initiatives with the firm's short- and long-term business objectives.
  • Lead market research and competitive analysis to identify opportunities, anticipate industry trends, and inform strategic positioning.
  • Establish, track, and report on key performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of all marketing and business development activities, ensuring accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as the steward of the firm's brand, ensuring consistent messaging, visual identity, and positioning across all channels and touchpoints.
  • Lead the development of innovative, creative campaigns that differentiate the firm in the marketplace and resonate with target audiences.
  • Oversee thought leadership strategy, including content creation, speaking engagements, publications, and strategic recognition opportunities that elevate the firm's profile and individual attorney visibility.
  • Direct the firm's integrated marketing efforts across all channels, including digital marketing (SEO, SEM, paid advertising, email marketing), social media, content marketing, public relations, and traditional media.
  • Oversee the firm's website, ensuring it serves as an effective business development tool with optimized content, user experience, and lead generation capabilities.
  • Leverage marketing technology, automation platforms, and analytics tools to drive efficiency, personalization, and measurable results.
  • Stay current on emerging marketing technologies and trends, including AI-driven marketing applications, and recommend innovative solutions to enhance the firm's competitive position.
  • Identify and maximize ROI on client events, sponsorships, webinars, speaking engagements and thought leadership opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain pitch materials, experience databases, and proposal content to support attorney business development efforts.
  • Oversee the firm's CRM system, ensuring data integrity and leveraging client intelligence to inform business development strategy.
  • Build, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing marketing and business development team, fostering a culture of creativity, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with practice group leaders and attorneys to develop and implement customized business development plans and coaching.
  • Manage the marketing and business development budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and demonstrable return on investment.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to firm leadership on marketing and business development matters, providing strategic counsel and actionable recommendations.
  • Design and deliver business development training programs to enhance attorney skills in networking, client development, and personal branding.
  • Provide individualized coaching to attorneys on business development planning, execution, and relationship management.
  • Create tools, resources, and best practices to empower attorneys to effectively participate in firm marketing and business development initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing or related Business Development degree.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressive marketing and business development experience in a professional services environment is required, with at least 5 years in a law firm setting and demonstrated experience at a leadership level.
  • Proven experience building, managing, and developing high-performing teams is essential. A track record of developing and executing successful, multi-channel marketing strategies that deliver measurable business results is required. Experience managing marketing budgets and demonstrating ROI on marketing investments is expected.

  • The ideal candidate will possess exceptional strategic thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information, identify opportunities, and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Superior communication skills, including writing, editing, presentation, and interpersonal abilities, are essential.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and execute with excellence are required.
  • The candidate should demonstrate executive presence and the ability to build credibility and collaborative relationships with attorneys and firm leadership. Adaptability and resilience in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with evolving priorities are necessary for success in this role.

Tech

  • Proficiency in CRM systems (e.g., LexisNexis InterAction, HubSpot, Salesforce, or equivalent) with experience leveraging CRM for business development insights is required.
  • Experience with marketing automation platforms, email marketing tools, and analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, social media analytics) is expected.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced PowerPoint and Excel skills, is required.
  • Experience with content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and basic familiarity with design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with SEO/SEM tools, paid digital advertising platforms, and emerging marketing technologies is a plus.
