Position Title: Executive Director, Location: White River Junction, Vermont (Hybrid Flexibility)

Vital Communities seeks a visionary, systems‑oriented leader to serve as its next Executive Director – a bold strategist and collaborative changemaker ready to guide a respected regional nonprofit into its next era of impact.

The Executive Director will serve as chief strategist, fundraiser, convener, and culture leader.

Role Expectations

  • Articulate a compelling regional vision that mobilizes diverse stakeholders.
  • Expand Vital Communities’ influence and deepen its systems impact.
  • Strengthen and diversify revenue to ensure long‑term sustainability.
  • Lead and inspire a high‑performing, mission‑driven team.
  • Navigate complexity with clarity, courage, and relational intelligence.

Key Leadership Priorities

1. Vision & Systems Strategy

  • Shape and execute a bold strategic framework responsive to regional change.
  • Elevate Vital Communities’ role as a cross‑sector systems leader.
  • Align programs, partnerships, and investments around measurable impact.
  • Demonstrate leadership within regional nonprofit community in commitment to JEDI principles.

2. Regional Leadership & Influence

  • Serve as chief spokesperson and ambassador across the Upper Valley and beyond.
  • Convene municipal, business, nonprofit, and philanthropic leaders to drive collective action.
  • Identify emerging opportunities and position the organization at the forefront of innovation.
  • Strengthen Vital Communities efforts to work with BIPOC‑led community organizations doing racial equity work.

3. Resource Development & Sustainability

  • Lead a diversified fundraising strategy spanning individual donors, foundations, corporations, and public funding.
  • Personally cultivate and solicit major gifts.
  • Strengthen financial planning, forecasting, and long‑term sustainability.

4. Organizational & Cultural Excellence

  • Develop and retain an engaged, collaborative leadership team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, inclusion, innovation, and professional growth.
  • Strengthen systems for evaluation, data‑informed decision‑making, and operational effectiveness.

Who You Are

  • Senior leadership experience in a mission‑driven organization.
  • A proven track record of successful fundraising and revenue diversification.
  • Experience managing complex budgets and high‑performing teams.
  • Strong facilitation and coalition‑building skills.
  • Exceptional communication and storytelling ability; strong public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of Upper Valley, its people, culture, and resources.
  • Emotional intelligence, cultural responsiveness, and a deep commitment to equity.
  • Systems‑thinking capacity and comfort leading through complexity to improve organizational health and efficacy.
  • Enthusiastic about regional leadership, grounded in humility, and motivated by tangible community impact.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range: Beginning at $126,053.

Benefits include health insurance (via an ICHRA), SIMPLE IRA with match up to 3%, 35+ days of PTO yearly including two week‑long office closures, and professional development support.
