Job Description
Position is responsible for staffing, training, and supervising the activities of a life and disability income products underwriting unit. Reviews cases referred by other underwriters. Responsible for underwriting larger, more complex applications and determines to accept, decline, or modify a risk. Has potential authority to write policies up to $10,000,000 of life insurance face amount and $10,000 monthly benefit on disability.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a decision maker (co-sign/second signature) on large insurance applications which exceed an underwriter's approval authority limit and are submitted as referrals for decision, escalation, or repricing.
- Manage projects within the Underwriting department with varying timelines and required knowledge; use data analytics to improve the underwriting process.
- Coach, develop, train, lead, and manage performance and career progression; handle administrative management (HR, PTO planning, etc.) and monthly 1:1s with direct reports.
- Provide technical leadership in underwriting training, field training, guideline creation/maintenance, and quality review (semi-annual Thought Measure assessments).
- Handle appeals and escalated service issues generated by the underwriting process.
- Plan, develop, and deliver field training as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent (4 years)
- 7-10 years of relevant experience
- Superior analytical skills
- Strong communication skills
- Previous experience leading teams
- Has or is actively working towards at least one professional designation such as FALU, CLU, FLMI, ChFC
- In-depth underwriting technical expertise and knowledge of specific underwriting areas
- Visa Sponsorship

In-Office Collaboration & Work Environment
We are client-centric and believe in face-to-face collaboration. Employees work in the office at least four days per week, with flexibility for one work-from-home day per week. Some roles may require additional in-office time; specifics will be discussed during the hiring process.
Compensation & Benefits
The estimated base salary for this role is $107,000 - $147,100 per year. Our pay-for-performance philosophy means total compensation may vary based on knowledge, skills, experience, and location. Most roles are eligible for variable pay in the form of bonuses, commissions, and/or long-term incentives. We offer a comprehensive benefits program, including vacation, sick time, 401(k), health, dental, and life insurances.
