Primary Purpose

To plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive instrumental (strings) music program that provides students with activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. To provide leadership and coordination and facilitate the efficient operation of the district music program.

Education/Certification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music.
  • TTAS certified.

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge of UIL and TEA guidelines in music.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully organize, manage, promote and instruct a jr. high school orchestra program.
  • Performance expertise in strings; fundamental skill in other instruments.
  • Orchestral conducting skills.
  • Member of Texas Music Educators Association.

Experience and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate 6-8 orchestra program and collaborate with other directors.
  • Prepare jr. high school string ensembles for UIL evaluation.
  • Evaluate students for placement in orchestra program.
  • Conduct ongoing student recruitment program, working with teachers 6-12 to promote and encourage student participation in the orchestra program.
  • Supervise building when in use for orchestra activities before/after school.
  • Trip planning.
  • Maintenance of uniforms and uniform inventory.
  • Development of grading policies and regular monitoring and proper implementation.
  • Cooperate with school staff and community to present other performances as appropriate.
  • Coordinate individualized music instruction program.
  • Coordinate calendar with other fine arts and school related activities.
  • Facilitate involvement of parents and community in music programs.
  • Monitor student eligibility for extracurricular participation.
  • Teach students individually and in small groups before and after school for musical skill development (tutoring; section rehearsals; etc.).
  • Plan, rehearse and conduct concerts throughout the school year.
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing improved curriculum.
  • Participate in professional activities, meetings, and workshops related to UIL and TMEA.
  • Comply with state law, district policy, and UIL rules related to student participation in extracurricular activities.
  • Assist staff in accurately completing entries and reports for UIL and TMEA activities.
  • Arrange for student participation in appropriate UIL and TMEA activities.
  • Coordinate student and staff travel.
  • Prepare students for participation in individual and small group competition, including TMEA auditions, UIL solo and ensemble contest.
  • Provide for student study sessions and tutoring.
  • Comply with school district policies and procedures for development and management of program budget, activity fund, and fundraising activities.
  • Manage inventory and repair of instructional resources, and equipment.
  • Prepare specifications for instruments and equipment. Coordinate student use and care of school owned equipment.
  • Manage orchestra music library ordering, cataloging and distribution.
  • Serve as a resource for community and school organizations.
  • Assist in district wide fine arts programs as appropriate.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Assist in the supervision of district wide music staff as appropriate.

Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

Equipment Used

Use orchestra instruments, computers, keyboards, recording/public address systems.

Physical and Mental Demands

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Motion: Frequent walking.

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment.

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours.
