The Director of Information Technology is responsible for both the strategy and execution of the firm's technology environment. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking technology leader with a strong grasp of AI, automation, cybersecurity, and modern IT architecture, coupled with exceptional communication skills and a proven ability to carry initiatives from concept through execution. This role requires someone who can think strategically while also remaining actively involved in the day-to-day operation, support, and improvement of the firm's IT environment.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy, Innovation & Business Alignment

  • Develop and execute a firm-wide technology strategy aligned with business objectives, growth plans, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the firm's AI and automation roadmap, identifying opportunities to streamline workflows, improve productivity, enhance client service, and reduce manual effort across tax, audit, advisory, and administrative functions.
  • Serve as the primary technology advisor to firm leadership, providing guidance on system selection, technology investments, integrations, and risk.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend practical, secure, and scalable solutions that improve efficiency and decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities to standardize, simplify, and modernize systems across the firm.
  • Translate business needs into clear technical direction and priorities.

IT Operations & Security

  • Actively manage and support the firm's IT environment, including Microsoft 365, infrastructure, cloud services, endpoints, and access management.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolution of complex or high-impact IT issues.
  • Oversee system architecture, integrations, and data flows between core applications.
  • Own cybersecurity strategy and execution, including risk assessments, controls, incident response, and employee training.
  • Maintain and test business continuity and disaster recovery plans.

Leadership, Projects & Vendors

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the IT team, including direct oversight of the Help Desk/Network Administrator.
  • Partner with firm leadership and department heads to identify needs and deliver effective solutions.
  • Manage technology projects end-to-end, from planning through implementation and support.
  • Manage vendors and service providers while retaining internal ownership of systems and decisions.
  • Communicate priorities, risks, and progress clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

Financial & Operational Oversight

  • Manage and optimize the IT budget to ensure investments deliver measurable business value.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of systems, controls, and processes and implement improvements.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, MIS, or related field (Master's preferred)

Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive IT experience, including 4–5+ years in a leadership role
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience managing and supporting IT environments
  • Experience developing and executing technology strategy in a regulated or professional services environment
  • Hands‑on experience with AI, automation, or workflow optimization tools
  • Strong background in cybersecurity, risk management, and business continuity
  • Experience with Microsoft-based environments and cloud platforms
  • CPA firm or professional services experience strongly preferred

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of modern IT infrastructure, cloud services, and security frameworks
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft 365
  • Familiarity with workflow automation, analytics, integrations, and APIs
  • Ability to evaluate and adopt AI tools responsibly and securely

Olsen Thielen offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you'll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the firm. The expected starting salary range for this role is $120,000 - $160,000. This range is an estimate, and salary range may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including department, location, work experience and training, qualifications, skill sets, licenses, certifications, education and other business and organizational needs. At Olsen Thielen, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. In addition to base pay, Olsen Thielen's compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time, exempt employees of all levels. This role also may be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
