Program Director for Student Development and Assessment

Position Designation: EHRA Non‑Faculty

Employment Type: Permanent – Full‑time

Work Schedule: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; Monday – Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours when necessary. Hours per week: 40. FLSA Status: Exempt.

Location: University Recreation, University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Salary Range: 62,451.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Program Director for Student Development and Assessment leads student employee development initiatives and department assessment projects within the University Recreation (UREC) department, supervising an intern.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

Student Development

  • Lead developmental programs and initiatives for over 250 UREC student employees.
  • Supervise an intern dedicated to student employee development.
  • Chair the UREC Student Training and Development Committee and serve as a non‑voting member of the UREC Awards and Recognition Committee.
  • Develop and manage student employee learning outcomes and oversee their implementation and assessment across the department.
  • Maintain and update the student employee manual, encompassing hiring, onboarding, accountability, recognition, and standardized departmental systems.
  • Plan and deliver staff trainings and other professional development programs for all UREC employees.
  • Assist the Director of University Recreation in developing leadership opportunities for student coordinators.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to integrate student learning and development into UREC programs and services.
  • Partner with Career Services, Leadership and Community Engagement, and other university departments to align UREC student development initiatives with institutional career‑readiness efforts.
  • Track usage data and assess student development initiatives to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with university, state, and national standards.
  • Assist in budget oversight and analysis, including expenditures, fees, and revenue related to development initiatives.

Assessment Initiatives

  • Lead all department assessment projects and initiatives.
  • Act as the UREC liaison to Student Affairs Research and Assessment; represent UREC on the Student Affairs Assessment Committee.
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop assessment plans, annual goals, KPIs, and related documents.
  • Ensure accurate, ethical data collection, reporting, and distribution.
  • Create and present reports and communications to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Generate data for UREC monthly, annual, and other reports to department leadership.

Administration

  • Actively participate in UREC professional staff team meetings.
  • Ensure the UREC mission is achieved and its values upheld.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the department’s strategic plans and annual priorities.
  • Advocate for UREC and foster campus and community partnerships to promote physical activity and holistic wellbeing.

General Administration

  • Attend mandatory Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte meetings and training sessions.
  • Serve on relevant committees and working groups assigned by the Director of University Recreation.
  • Participate in NIRSA and other professional associations as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of University Recreation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in recreation, sport management, and/or higher education; or a combination of education and experience.
  • 5 or more years of experience working in collegiate recreation and/or student development.
  • Deep understanding of student development theory and its application in a collegiate recreation setting.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience leading student employee development initiatives.
  • Strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a culture of belonging and wellbeing.

Certifications / Licenses

  • American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED certification (required).
  • American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED instructor certification (preferred).
