The Museum of the Southwest, an AAM‑accredited institution located in Midland, Texas, seeks an Executive Director to chart new pathways for growth, engagement, and sustainability.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead strategic planning and rebranding initiatives, facility upgrades, campus unification, and growth in visitation and revenue.
  • Develop a business plan, policies, and procedures addressing financial stewardship and sustainability.
  • Provide leadership support for a capital campaign focused on creating a new Visitor Center by adaptive reuse of historic stables and increasing staffing and endowment growth.
  • Celebrate and commemorate the Museum’s 60th anniversary in 2026.
  • Leverage the Museum’s status as an AAM‑accredited institution for greater visibility, impact, and community engagement.
  • Lead the Museum’s Board and staff through the AAM re‑accreditation process.
  • Support the Museum’s commitment to diverse talent at staff and board levels, reflecting the community’s footprint.
  • Manage staff, inspire teamwork, and foster leadership skills; collaborate with curatorial, programmatic, and educational directions.
  • Coordinate fundraising, maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and the community, preparing for a capital campaign.
  • Maintain positive board relations, ensuring transparency and best governance practices.
  • Serve as primary spokesperson, leading outreach and marketing to elevate the Museum’s profile.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum five years of executive/management experience in nonprofit environments, preferably museums or similar mission‑driven organizations.
  • Strategic planning acumen, vision communication, consensus building.
  • Proficiency in financial and nonprofit business management; oversee annual budget, interpret financial statements, communicate performance.
  • Successful fundraising experience with donors, foundations, corporate and governmental funding.
  • Management and organizational skills for leading staff and volunteer teams.
  • Strong communication, advocacy, interpersonal skills to network and connect with audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse constituents, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent life experience.

COMPENSATION

$130,000 – $160,000 per year
