Duties & Responsibilities

The Chief Wellness Officer (CWO) at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, leads and oversees the planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of all wellness and resilience-building programming initiatives that foster staff wellness across Bellevue. The CWO helps create awareness and provides tools and resources to all employees to help them maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The CWO oversees wellness from a multitude of angles with new programming informed by ongoing hospital-wide needs assessments. The CWO serves as a liaison and advisor to Bellevue leadership in advancing system and practice-level changes that promote well-being and works to educate about and reinforce the importance of healthcare worker well-being on the optimal function of a Hospital and Health System. In addition, the CWO oversees the Bellevue wellness and resilience Helping Healers Heal program, throughout all service-lines, driving the mission and vision of Bellevue and the NYC Health + Hospitals organization.

Reporting to the Bellevue Chief Culture Officer as well as system-wide Chief Wellness Officer of NYC Health + Hospital, the Bellevue CWO will oversee coordination, management and successful implementation/execution of wellness programming and expected deliverables in correlation to the 8 dimensions of wellness – Emotional, Environmental, Financial, Intellectual, Occupational, Physical, Social and Spiritual. The Bellevue CWO will actively partner with hospital leadership to determine hospital needs and strategically devise, implement, and execute innovative and high yield wellness programming.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee and govern the Helping Healers Heal program, throughout all service-lines, driving the mission and vision of Bellevue and the NYC Health + Hospitals organization.
  • Leads the H3/Workforce Wellness Steering Team and is responsible for its composition, priorities, and establishment of subcommittees as needed. Works to ensure diverse inclusion in subcommittee composition (e.g. Physicians, Nursing, care experience, HR, non-clinical staff, communications/public relations, GME leaders, residents and trainees), with strategic inclusion from multiple departments, areas, and tours.
  • Partner with NYU affiliate partners to develop shared resident wellness programming
  • Identify specific gaps within current wellness programs and opportunities to build on the existing strengths of the programs
  • Institute alignment between different wellness groups to create improved awareness of wellness tools and resources
  • Applies change management processes and tools to execute a strategy that sustains adoption of behavioral changes
  • Responsible for strategic planning associated with health and wellness programs and overall embedding and fostering of wellness culture
  • Responsible for leading, developing and maintaining wellness programs to encourage healthy lifestyles and reducing risk by addressing issues such as compassion fatigue, burnout, joy in work, and systemic and individual resilience.
  • Actively serve on the NYC Health + Hospitals Workforce Wellness Taskforce working to serve the system and help provide leadership and alignment of multiple initiatives across the organization, as well as executing new system-initiated programming locally at Bellevue
  • Collaborate actively with the H+H System-wide CWO
  • Ensure awareness of wellness programs and resources available via communications
  • Implement and maintain health and wellness activities
  • Regularly evaluate the program components to identify new opportunities, developed by NYC Health + Hospitals, internally at Bellevue, or discovered via continuous monitoring of nationwide trends and best practices; partners with external organizations as needed
  • Optimization and continuous improvement of H3 program and wellness offerings
  • Creates a program that ensures confidentiality
  • Conduct training, skill-set building and education around wellness activities, burnout and compassion fatigue
  • Advise and oversees critical response planning and efforts for all service lines
  • Collaborates with each service line to assess, identify, and implement changes that positively affect their employee wellness and engagement
  • Further enhances the model for change and performance improvement processes for the system aligning all service lines with the strategic pillars
  • Identify existing wellness programming and work to strategically unify wellness initiatives to increase visibility of existing offerings and work to reduce redundancies
  • Actively oversees and conducts assessments on Helping Healers Heal functioning and monitors change progress
  • Oversee data management, ensuring integrity of data and use of H3 portal to accurately reflect wellness programming occurring
  • Partner with key stakeholders’ hospital-wide, inclusive of Directors of Service, Behavioral Health leads, Nursing, GME.
  • Work collaboratively with and provide oversight of H3 Peer Support Champions and Wellness Program Director and Wellness Program Coordinator to support the CWO’s portfolio
  • Govern targeted wellness/crisis response, including trainings and targeted implantation of action plans for all disciplines (Residents/Fellows, Administration, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications

1. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Engineering, Health Care Specialization, Physical or Social Sciences or a related discipline; and five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative, managerial and/or consultative experience; or

2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in disciplines, as listed in “1” above; and six (6) years of progressively responsible administrative, managerial and/or consultative experience; or

3. Satisfactory equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience. However, all candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in disciplines, as listed in “1” above.

Department Preferences

  • Outstanding management skills and an ability to work collaboratively with medical staff, hospital management, and frontline clinical and non-clinical staff
  • Preferred experience in integrative health or wellness programming
  • Ability to integrate health and wellness program initiatives into culture and organizational missions
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a diverse, highly complex environment with clinicians and highly trained individuals
  • Familiarity with change management principles, methodologies, and tools
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively at all levels in an organization
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships
  • Proficient with data analysis and interpretation
